DEATH OF MR ESCOTT.
SOLDIER AND M.P. TRIBUTE* FROM LEGISLATOR-. 'Ry Telegraph.—Parliamentary Reporter.) WELLINGTON. Friday The House of Representative* adjourned after a short sitting to-day out of respect to the memory of tbe late Mr. .1. 11. F-cott. meniher for Pahiatua. who died this morning after a lengthy period of ill-health. The Prime Minister, in movir.l the deep regret of the House and its sym pp.thy with the dead member's relative*, paid a high tribute to the personal character and attributes of decease!, who was born at Orepuki, Southland, in, 1572, his father having been a Crimean i veteran, who took part in the storming of the heights of Alma and the siese of Hebastopol. Tho late member himself served through the Roer war as a private with tbe second contingent, and some months ago indicated hie intention of enlisting in tbe New Zealand Expeditionary Forces, but ill-health prevented him from .fulfilling bis desire to light alongside his comrades at the front. The Premier added that it could be truthfully and correctly said that the late member had left many friends and not one enemy. The lion. (I. W. Russell. Mr. Forbes, and other members added their tributes to the memory of th.i dead legislator, and after the pa—ing or' the usual resolution the. house adjourned till to-morrow afternoon.
