CYCLING.
The American Trans-Continental Motor Car Record has again been reduced, it is only two weeks back since word came to hand that E. G. Baker, the crack American racing motor cyclist, in conjunction with W."*F. Sturm, had succeeded in driving across the American Continent in 7 days 11 hours 52 minutoe. Now R. Hammond, on an "Empire," has driven from San Francisco to New York, 3384 miles, in the remarkable time of 6 days 10 hours 45 minutes, equal to an average speed of 21 4-sths miles per hour for the whole journey, including aU stops t>n route. The longest run was 917 miles, negotiated in 36 hours. This year's "Indianapolis" motor car race, one of the classic epeed events of America, was won by D. Resta on a "Peugeot." The winner's speed average for the 300 miles was 84 m.p.h., D'Alenc on a "Ducsenberg" (a 16-valve 4-eylin-der engined car) finished second, with a speed average of 83J m.p.h., whilst Mulford (Peugeot) was third, close up. The British representative, a 12-cylinder "Sunbeam," finished fourth, with a speed average of 79$ miles. Resta, the winner, raced with considerable success in America during the past two years. In last year's "Indianapolis," decided over a distance of 500 miles, Resta finished up second, narrowly missing the rich prize through a bad skid, resulting in a strained steering gear and a delay for new tyres, near the finish of the contest. Dc Palma, the 1915 winner, with a speed average of nearly 90 m.p.h., did not compete in this year's race owing to being unable to get duplicate engine parts from Germany for his Mercedes car.
