V.MhY EXPEXDITURE £4,7o<tP- ■' -4 j^U (From Our Special Correspondent LONDON", .fiinill The additional vole. oo r credit of CIO,----000.000 passed by tlio House of Conimjns, ]on May 2rt without dissent was the' 'eleventh vote of the kind grantod since the outbreak of the war. and brings the aggregate' amount of money time placed lat the Government's disposal to no less 'a Mim than i'2,352,000.00n. In laying his proposal before the House, Mr said that during the fifty days which ended on the preceding Saturday the expenditure had been about £241.000.000, or an average of £-1,820,000 a day. The amount waa made up as follows: — Army, Navy, and Munitions f14n.000.00D Loan's to Allies and Dominions 74,000,000 l-'ood Supplies. Rail-n-aj-s. and \llscellaneous 17.500.000 £241,400.000 It is estimated that expenditure' in the immediate future will average not lies* than £4.7. : i0,000 a day, so that the I three hundred million pounds just voted will only suffice to "sec this thing through' , till the -beginning of August, even if the pace of expenditure does not increase, as it is apparently bound to ido, seeirp the extent to which Great i Britain continue to finance the i requirements of her iillies and overseas j Dominions, and the further big expenditure that must be incurred in connection with the provision for the dependents of the huge batches of married mien who are now being called to the colours up to the age of 41. There is also to be considered the ever-growing pension list, and we are fact to face with the prospect of having to meet a daily war billot over £5,000,000. If the vote of credit just passed lasts until August opens, we shall then have been at war for two years, and tho average daily expenditure of the Mother Country during that period will have been about £3,027,000 per day for war purposes only. At a conservative estimate future expenditure cannot be less than five millions per day; therefore, if the war laste for three years, as Lord Kitchener is alleged to have predicted it would, Groat Britain will have to foot a total war bill of £4,207,000,000—a truly appalling Bum to contemulate.
