FORTNIGHT'S SHIPPING
AT AUCKLAND AND ONEHUNGA. ENGINEER'S REPORT. The details of shipping at the port of Auckland ; for the fortnight ending on July 13 were submitted to the Auckland Harbour Board this afternoon. Captain Sergeant (Harbourmaster) reported that the arrivals consisted of one royal mail steamer, two large cargo steamers, three intercolonial or island traders, eight
coastal steamers, two sailing vessels, and two Japanese warships, together with 216 local coasters. This made a grand total of 104,399 tons gross and 69,730 tons net. As compared with the corresponding period for last year the returns revealed a decrease of eight vessels. During the fortnight the Calliope Dock was engaged for two days, and the 600----ton slipway for 10 days. Captain R. H. Gibbons reported that on the Manukau 13 steamers had arrived during the fortnight, as against 13 over the same period of 1915. In reference to harbour works the engineer (Mr. W. H. Hamer) reported that the wet weather had seriously interfered with the work at St. George's Bay reclamation, and the consistency of the silt was proving troublesome to cover with dry earth. In reporting on the Central wharf, the engineer stated
that sufficient pointa to croeeovers have been obtained to complete the first set. The secretary reported that the' monthly payments made in respect to members of the Board's staff now on active service totalled £220. To date £2,36!» 5/2 had been paid.
