THE IRISH SITUATION.
■ DISCUSSION IN COMMONS. NO FEAR OF TROUBLE. BIG GARRISON RETAINED. (Australian and N.Z. Cable Association.) July 12. The House of Lords discussed Ix>rd Hardinge's report on the Sinn Fein revolt. Several speakers warmly criticised the Government's policy, which, they said, permitted loyal men to serve their country while disloyal men were left unhindered in their work. The man who was responsible for the rebellion (Mr. Birrell) got off uncensured. The critics said they believed Ireland would still have to be governed by the military, and it probably would require a large force. Under the new proposals members of the Sinn Fein dominated the west and south of Ireland. The Marquis of Lansdowne said the bill which the Government was pledgedto introduce would take some time to prepare. He was confident that under the system at present in force there oilght not to be any fear that the Irish situation would get out of hand. He believed Sir John Maxwell had 40,000 troops under his command, and the Government would give him all the support to which he was entitled. A sufficient garrison would be maintained during the transition stage. An Order-in-Council would be issued to-morrow, prohibiting the carrying of arms in Ireland without a permit.
