The business of the Council was prefaced by the pas-sing of a resolution of sympathy ivith the Deputy Mayor (Mr A. J. Entrican) and his relatives in the loss they have eustalned by the death of Mr Robert Entricau. KASSING OF TITE lIIiLLS. A letter from the Auckland Town Planning League iirglng the Council to enforce the statutory provisions for -the preservation of such of the volcanic hills as come within its jurisdiction was referred to the Public Services Committee. In reply to a letter received from residents iv Station Road, Kcmucra, asking for the footpath in the thoroughfare to be put in order, the City Engineer reported that the street had no kerbing and channelling, and that It wad only In tho same condition r.s numerous other streets in the TSemuern district. A letter was received from Mr Percy Spencer, on behalf of Hoffmann and Hawthorne, claiming the sum of £3250 for laud taken for M.vers Park. The Mayor characterised the amount as %ems ridiculously out of proportion, and it 'was decided to flic a formal denial. TAXI-MEN'S PETITION. A petition from taxi-men askin-r -that in view of the impending removal of the Queen j Street taxi-cab stand, the Council should consider the matter of establishing It In Victoria Street West, -was referred to the Works Committee, with the suggestion that Mr W. Messrs. liagnnll and Xerhcny supported a resolution that £20 be spent on the work, while Messrs. Michaels and Baildou opposed it as being unnecessary, and us duplicating existing accommodation. The proposal was defeated, and the report adopted.

WATER STORAGE. The Works Committee reported that It had authorised the work of raising the dam at Waitakcre lift, by which Its capacity would be raised by 33.000.01W callous, - and recommended the Couucll to Instruct lie City Engineer to report further 011 a lar««r scheme, whereby the wall, by being strengthened, might be raised lßft. The report was adopted. THE DESTRUCTIVE .TYRE. Arising out of the recent conference between the Works Committee and representatives of various local bodice in regard to a uniform by-law, dealing with the width of motor car tyres, tuo Works Committee recommended, that the nutter be referred to n special . committee to consider the provisions of such by-law and report. The recommendation was adopted by the Council. SHOr KKOXTAGES. .

The report was referred back, tbe resolution thereby conveying the Council's approval of a 16ft minimum. PROHIBITIVE TENDERS. Tenders for underground and overhead cables were recently advertised for by the Electrical Dcpartineut, and the Public Services Committee reported to the Council that six flrms had tendered at schedule rates, as v result of which the Electrical Engineer was unable to recommend any for acceptance.

• The Electrical Engineer was empoweredto make the best arrangements possible to obtain the cable necessary for the sopply to the Newmarket -Workshops. ' < MISCELLANEOUS. The Hon_ B. Mltchelson was appointed a member of the Art Gallery and Library Committee. Tlie Works Committee's recommendation that an application for the Council to take over streets in the Ivanhoe Estate, Arch Hill, be declined until certain' improvements have been effected was adopted. The recommendation of the Public Services Committee that the of Messrs. Parker, Lamb and Company for a twelve months' extension of their contract , for removing dead timber from the Hula State Forest Beserve be declined, was referred back to committee. - A letter from the Auckland Provincial Aeroplane Fund Committee, asking the Council to receive subscriptions on its behalf, was. received, and it was decided to reply that the matter would more appropriately be dealt with by the Patriotic Association.
