THE ILL-FATED MALOJA.
HER LAST EXCITING VOYAGE * FROM AUSTRALIA \ Particulars of an exciting time experienced by passengers from Australia by R-M.s. Maloja on her last voyage to London are contained in a letter from a lady passenger to friends in Melbourne. 1 Special interest attaches to the incidents, ias there were many Australians on i board, and it was on commencing her i next trip that the liner was sunk in the i English Channel. "After leaving Port. : Said," the writer states, "we had boat 1 practice every morning, at which every- - body assisted. We weren't allowed any- - where without our lifebelts, and even had 3 to take them to meals, so it was quite - thrilling. On a Friday afternoon we got i the order for 'all passengers to put on, - and keep on, lifebelts,' whereupon intense ~ excitement ensued. "On board was an admiral and his t staff, and there were nearly always 50 i men on duty watching for any sign of a - periscope, a duty at which all male pas- ,. sengers had to take a turn. We were y lucky to have a destroyer as convoy for c a part of the journey. She was a little c beauty, and tore backwards and forwards ,f in front of us. I don't quite know what _ happened on Friday, but an officer told ; us afterwards that the liner had been g chased by a. submarine. The destroyer , c came up and semaphored, then tore away, , then came back and cruised round, and j. so on all night. It was awfully exciting. t j I think we would have been all right if n the steamer had been torpedoed, for everything possible was done to secure the safety of those on board. I've never seen such a well-managed ship. I hope I can return home by her." r. — . v "Excelsior" flannelette is practically ,'j. flame-proof. White an.l striped effects. In tjreat demand.
