BACK TO WORK.
THE RETURNED SOLDIER.
HOW EMPLOYERS Ci2J HELP.
With a steadily increasing number of returned wounded and invalided soldiers endeavouring to regain their civil employment the necessity for the co-opera-tion of employers with those who have undertaken the task of placing the men in berths again becomes a matter of much urgency, and the Discharged Soldiers' Employment Bureau, which has its headquarters in Wellington, calls attention by advertisement elsewhere to thi3 important patriotic work. An account of what has been accomplished in Auckland in this direction is indicated by the Mayor (Mr. J. H. Gunson), who is president of the local Patriotic Association. The Auckland Bureau, under the wing of the Patriotic Association, is working as a branch of the Government Employment Bureau in Wellington, of which Mr. J. R. Samson is in charge," stated the Mayor. "Mr. Samson recently visited Auckland, and went fully into the question as to what arrangements were necessary and as to what line the work should lake. It was then arranged that a separate branch should be established here, and those in charge of tbk branch of the Patriotic Association's activities are Messrs. Thompson, Furby, and Fenton. A considerable amount of useful work already has been done. Fifty-one returned men were reported at the last meeting of the executive to have been placed in situations, and negotiations in the hope of placing a large nnrrroer of others' were still proceeding. Many of these have since been placed. The number of applicants is steadily maintained, and the energies of the committee are not in any way relaxed The policy of the Auckland committee is to continue its co-operation -with the Wellington organisation, and any assistance that can be given or received is quickly availed of. A special appeal is now being made by the bureau, ahd those who have vacancies in any branch of work whatever, or can in any way assist in this work in Auckland, will find their representations dealt with with the utmost expedition if they get into touch -with the local committee at the Town HalL" As examples of the classes of labour it is prepared to place if vacancies are notified, the bureau mentions messengers, liftmen, storemen, clerks, light labourers, and drivers.
