GERMANS' FLAME ATTACK ON MEUSE FAILS.
ARTILLERY INFLICTS HEAVY LOSSES. ENEMY STILL SQUANDERING MEN AT VAUX. PARIS, March 21. A French communique states: "Our artillery at Haute Chevauchee destroyed German reservoirs, releasing clouds of sulphurous gas. ''A fresh German division, using flaming liquids, attempted to extend their front west of the Meusc between Avocourt and Malancourt. Our guns broke up the attack, inflicting heavy losses. "The Germans were able to make only slight progress in the eastern portion of Malancourt Wood. On the night of the lflth French aeroplanes v dropped 25 bombs on the station at Bun, on the Meusc." The "Times" correspondent in Paris states that the enemy continues to squander men in further attempts to penetrate the French position' in the neighbourhood of Vaux. These isolated attacks arc difficult to reconcile with any comprehensive plan. A Berlin communique says:—"For the purpose of preventing our further preparations against their defensive works in the vicinity of Douaumont and Vaux the French attacked the ullage. Portions of our newly arrived division repulsed them with heavy losses. ....
