ITALY'S GENERAL ATTACK ON AUSTRIAN LINE
TROOPS PROTECTED BY ANCIENT ARMOUR. BAYONETS USED AS DAGGERS IN TRENCH FIGHTING. LONDON, March 19. The "Daily Chronicle's" correspondent at Rome states that, being desirous of relieving the pressure at Verdun, General Cadorna, Italian commander-in-chief, is conducting a general attack from Plava to the Adriatic. Despite the exceptionally favourable weather, the sodden ground is preventing massed infantry attacks except at Carso, but bomb-throwers and aerial torpedoers are active. The troops are protected by quaint mediaival head shield and breast plates. They engage in hand-to-<hand lighting in the labyrinthian defences of Carto, where many, being uuabU to fix their bayoneU, uacd than M daggers.
