OLD RESIDENTS DEATH.
MRS. ELEANOR DELANEY. Brief reference was made recently to the death at the age of 89 years of Mrs. Eleanor Delaney, an old resident of this city. The death took place at the residence of Mr. W. Rickards. East Street. Newton. Deceased was born in Dublin, and arrived in Auckland in 18C2 from Victoria by the steamer Claude Hamilton. Her" husband and elder son had come across earlier. Mr. Delaney was recruiting sergeant for the late Colonel Pitt, who organised the Ist Waikato Regiment. His son Walter, who was with his mother when she died, is stated to be the youngest veteran of the Maori War. "Mrs. Delaney, with her young family, was with the regiment at Tauranga. and later at Opotiki about the time the Rev. Volkner 'was murdered by the Maoris. Two of her sons, John and Walter, were in action at Opotiki, and the latter took part in the campaign against Te Kooti and Titokowaru, on the East and West Coasts, being present at the fight at Gate Pa. Mrs. Delaney was very highly esteemed by all who knew her.
