RAILWAY FATALITY.
MAN KILLED AT AVONDALE.
PINNED UNDER THE ENGINE.
JACKS USED TO RELEASE BODY.
A shocking fatality occurred at the Avondale railway station this morning, when a well-known resident, David Daniele, aged 65, met his death. ' The deceased was employed in Barton's boot factory, Kingsland, and he usually caught the train leaving Avondale at about 7 o'clock. This morning he came down a path which leads through a turnstile from Lyard Street, across the line, on to the railway platform. Apparently lie failed to notice the incoming train from New Lynn, and although the engine whistles shrieked and the emergency brakes were applied, a collision could not be avoided, and the old man was knocked down and tub over.
It was found impossible to release the prostrate figure, and jacks , had to be procured in order that the engine should be raised. When withdrawn, it was found that the unfortunate man had had the base of the ekull badly smashed, and it is probable that death was instantaneous. Dr. Moore and Constable Reid were in attendance, but nothing remained to be done after the body was released from underneath the cowcatcher. The remains were conveyed to the morgue, where an inquest will be held.
Deceased was a well-known resident, and lived with hie family in Brown Street, Avondale.
