IN THE VERDUN SECTOR

GERMANS STILL FIRMLY HELD THE EAST AFRICAN CAMPAIGN GERMANY'S TERMS OF PEACE The thunder of the guns continues with little abatement in the Verdun sector, but there have been no fresh infantry attacks, and the position of the troops is unchanged. It is reported that the Germans are using the lull to mass further huge forces for a renewal of the attack, but if that be so the enemy will probably find that the defence has not wasted its opportunities. It is reported by way of Italy that violent disturbances occurred in several German cities following 'the tremendous losses of Verdun. These resulted in several cases jn machine guns being turned on the crowd. The campaign in German East Africa is being vigorously prosecuted, and General Smuts has made considerable advances in the Kilima Njaro district. The enemy's native army was at latest advices in full retreat. It is reported from Rumania that the Russians are preparing for a great offensive in the Bukowina sector. Bulgaria is getting ready to desert the Central Powers, and a complete failure at Verdun will, it is believed, result in her cutting adrift from the Central Powers—if she can. Colonel House, who recently visited the combatant capitals as President Wilson's envoy, has reported to the President the terms on which Germany will negotiate peace. He reports that the Allies are not prepared to consider peace at present.
