April 24 anil — C.J.r. Autumn. The projected trip to Australia with Eligible- and Co. is not likely to\eventuate. Avon Park showed signs of soreness after her efforts at Dannevirke, and did not start at Napier Park yesterday. Owing to a slight illnes in his family A. J. MeFlynn did not journey south tor flit Napier Park meeting. Gold Tainting injur.d herself on the eve of the Napier Park Meeting, and could not fullil her engagements at the gathering. A patron of A. Robertson's stable has secured the Bunyan gelding from Mr. A. B. Carlcy, and he is now working under that trainer's charge at EUerslie. The Hawke's Bay horseman. L. Wilson, intends taking up his residence in the South Island for a few months, having t\ number of riding engagements to lill at the Southern gathering. Mr. T. 11. Lowry lias disposed of Marshal McDonald to Mr. 11. Hassall. of Hastings. The son of Soult is stated to have quite got over 'his wayward habits, and may be put to the jumping game. J. O'Connell, who was badly injured at the Bawke's Hay Spring meeting last October, has made a good recovery, but does not expect to do any riding for ; it least a month. Egypt has been giving his trainer some trouble with the injuries he through being galloped on at Wclling(on. and has done very little work outside trotting since that fixture. F. Davis intends starting with Mr. Lowrv's youngsters next week, the first pair to be handled beins a colt by Kinland from Cantata, and a colt by Finland—War Scare, the latter a full brother to ISjorneborg. Kooya made her first appearance as ;i I hurdler at the Xapier Park meeting, being saddled up to contest the Omar.inui Hack Hurdles. The daughter of Si;?nalman was nearly down at one fence, and did not jump with any confidence, but the experience should do her good. Just before he got on the train to leave for Xapier J. iPSliea received a wire I offering him the mount on Indigo in the | Xapier Cup. lie Jiad already accepted the ride on Tursefiller in the event, nnil had to decline, and Indigo won, while Pnrsefiller was left at the post, and practically took no part in tiio race. The Aucklanders luck was out. The Erst of Mr. 0. L. Stead's recent importations to carry silk was Marie Agnes, which is by Marco—Oriole, and which was eaddled up to contest the Trial Hack Stakes at Xapier Park yesterday. The filly was very backward, but show-ed some pace, and may turn out useful with a little more experience. The half-sister to the imported Panmure, ttcvelenta, also imported, was unlucky to. lose the Trial .Stakes at Napier yesterday. The daughter of Troutbeck did not begin too well, but soon had a good position, and when she shot to the front entering the straight it looked all over.. Her rider. Bell, however, looked to take matters a bit easy, and Lady Multifid finishing fast, just gnt up to grt the verdict by half a lirad.
The Auckland-bred co?t Beltane was sent oiii a strong favourite for the Sapling Stakes at Napier Park yesterday. The son of Elysian began well, and showed a lot of pace for three furlongs, hut. the state of the ground was against him. for he was slipping and sliding badly in the straight. Beltane is still a bit green, but goes very fast.
T. F, Quinlivan has made a start in handling his youngsters, and the AllBlack—Float Colt, full brother to Dribble and the Demosthenes —Gold Thread colt have already been handled. The two English fillies, one by Sunstar and th'_. other by Bayardo, imported by Mr. W. (!. Stead, have also been handled, and :i filly by Maori King—Lantote and a filly by All Black—C'oncordia are to be brought in shortly.
Tlip little story ancnt the cleverness of the Island trainpr in his dealings with another of the profession from Ilawke's Buy over a race at Woodville. which was reproduced in these columns from a South bland exchange turns out to be. as jfeni-rally expected, incorrect. The Riccartonitp was a cheque to invest on the Hawke's Bay horse, and the money was duly put on the machine, and the twenty tickets numbered in rotation given back, i* wonderful how some people like to appear a bit out of the ordinary in the <•» cs of their friends. THE NAPIER CUP. Xine of tlie ten acceptors Raddled up for the Napier Cup, and it produced one of the finest finishes y<;t seen for the event. The start was delayed for some time by the vagaries of Indigo. Riipahu. Eligible, and Pursefiller, all of which were -kicking baJly. while Indigo and Pureefiller persistently refused to face the tapes, and as a consequence the luet- : named was left at the post, and cantered behind the field for about three furlongs. Rupahu was the early leader, -and went out to win from end to end. Turning for ■home it looked as if the field would never catch him. Once in the straight, however, Eligible and Indigo came along with the"- challenges, and inside the distance Ryan was seen to be uneasy on Rupaliu. When asked for a final effort the (Jisborne horse failed to struggle on, and Eligible and Indigo headed him at the lawn rails. The latter pair raced side by side over the raet hundred yards, and thy; three-year-old 'looked like heating his olaer rival, but Indigo would not be denied, and, sticking to his task, enatched a victory by a head. Both riders got the most out of their mounts, L. Wilson in particular Tiding a fine race on Indigo. He nursed •him nicely for the final run, and the son of Mystification never once faltered, his victory being very popular. Eligible, was somewhat unlucky, slipping on the greasy ground in the straight at the critical moment. He ran a good race with S.ll in the saddle. Rewi Poto was disappointing, and was beaten before the actual struggle took plata.
NAPIER PARK RACING CLUB.
AUTUMN MEETING OPENED, \ KACIXG IX THE RAIN, ,°s< ■ IXDIGO WIXS THE CUP. \ A JOCKEY. INJURED. J (By Telegraph.—Special to "Star.") s , 1 XAPIER, this day. \ The Napier Park Racing Club's Au- J tnmn meeting opened at lireenmeadows 1 to-day. Several showers fell during th» i s morning, but it cleared before racing j s commenced. Shortly before the. Cup, ; however, rain again fell, and the Cup : and the next two races were run ill rain, the ground becoming greasy. When 1 Scorch came down over Brunswick in tuo Hurdle Race, her rider, H. Poscombe, had his collarbone broken. The racing ; was of an interesting character, the Cup ] ill particular providing a line struggle. ( Mr. McMahon. the stipendiary stew-1 1 ard present, cautioned Hurt for his hand-1' ling of Kooya in the Oniarninii Rurdle j Race, 'and also advised Bell, rider of ' Revelenta in the Trial Plate, to put a ( little more vigour into his finishing ' effort in future. THE TOTALIZATOR. , Speculation during the afternoon was ) brisk, the sum of C1C,040 passing ) through the machines, as against £14,451 1 last year, an increase of £1,389. |.' THE MEETING OPENED. \ J The seven acceptances saddled up for j < the Omaranui Hack Hurdles, and Bruns-I, wick was made a seven pounds better • favourite than Kooya, while Scorch, j" Wirokino, Sensitive, Tipatipa and Glad-! , ful were fancied in that order, j, The start was somewhat un- j even, Scorch and Kooya being j slow to move. Wirokino showing the way to the first fence, but once over, Seiuitive went to the , front, with Brunswick, Tipatipa and Gladful almost on terms, I with Wirokino next and Kooya a long i way last, and they passed the stand in i, this order. Going along'the back. Sen«i- J tive and Brunswick cleared out from the I; Held, and they were almost on terms at j the last fence. Brunswick hit hard, and i came down. Scorch, which was some din-! tanee behind, coming down over him, til" ' mishap leaving Sensitive to go on and ' win easily by a dozen lengths from Glad-1 ful, which was a couple of lengths in front of Kooya, with Wirokino fourth. THE HACKS. Tin. withdrawal of Admiral Bcatty and llelsingfors left eleven to contest the Ksk Hack Handicap, for which Trials, which had the services of O'Shea, was made a six pounds better favourite than ! 4-he Hon. -I. D. Ormond's repreaentativi", ' Hydros, while a lot of nionev went on • OoMshot and Maryland, and n little on | Spectual. When they were let go Tlials | was first to move, but was soon headed i o(T. meeting witli some interference, i '.Marimba going into the lo"ad followed by i I Carlysian. Maryland, and Spectual in • I that order. .Marimjjjj, was well clcnr 1 when they turned for home, and easily [ holding her own in the run to the judjrc | won by two lengths from Maryland.l which was half a length in front oi ' \ •fuck .Tellicoc. Carlysian was fourth, and j then rami. Triak. Hydrtu, and Paraiv.i. j After the .race C. 'Price, the rider oi j Parawa. complained that he had lieen interfered with by Pendant stumbling, the inquiry held showing that the occurrence was accidental. A FINE FINISH. With the exception of Jlilltkipal all the acceptors carded came out for the Napier Cup. nine lining up at the harrier. For some ti.ne punters were divided in their opinion.; ilri to tinmerits of Eligible, llewipoto and Indigo. but eventually Eligible was in pride of place, with sixty <idd more tk-Kets on his chance than Rev.ipoto, while Indigo died out of it to a large extent, nid only carried just over four hundred pounds, a hundred and lifty pounds le_--.s than Kewipoto and nineteen pouinla more than Purectiller. Multiply and Kupaliu had plenty of friends, hut Catnpeador. .Jem, and Dieeusekm were all at long prices. There was a long delay at the start, Jnd'igo, Eligible, Kupaliu "and Pursetillcr all giving trouble, and when 'the barrier lifted the lasUiamed was turned round and practically took no part in the race. Eligible wa.s tirot to move, and Rupahu at once went to the front, and fchowud the way out of the straight, with Eligible and Rewipoto together next, and Indigo, Multiply. Discussion. Jem and Campeador racing in that order. Going , a-long the bu:U Kupaliu was out four lengths in front of Eligible and Rewipoto, and then another couple of lengths away came Indigo and Discussion, with Multiply and Campeador the ludt pair. This order wats maintained as they set out for tho run across -the top, but coming round the home turn Eligible and Indigo made a forward move, and at the distance were within striking distance. A little further on Rupahu began to tire, and Indigo and the three-yrar-oIJ can past him. li desperate finish resulting in Indigo getting the verdict by a. short head. Rupaiiu was two lengths a.wa.\ third, and then came Multiply, llewipoto, Jem and Campeador, with Dib cinssion hi.st. A TWO FIGURE DIVIDEND. Circle Lady was the only withdrawal from the Trial Hack Stakes, in which backers thought Rcvenenta unbeatable. J.*dy Kilworth ruled as second favourite, I while outside. Atuatoro, none of tlie others went over the hundred pound . mark, the race being a poor betting , one. The start ivas a very straggling , one. the field leaving in a long lino, I i Eldepedee being badly left, while Lady 1 Kilworth also lost a Jot of ground". • Marie Agnes was quickest to begin, but ■ King's Best and Floram-i: soon headed I her, and- led across the top, where Revi - lenta and Lady Kilworth were handy, ; with Lady Multilid and Reveleiita lead- ■ iv:_- the others. Turning for_/iome Reve- ' lerita ran past the leading division, and , her victory was loudly proclaimed, but i Lady Multifid coming along on the out- ' side jiiß't got up to snatch a half head victory. Florance was two lengtlw away third', and bhen came Queen Lizzie. • Atuatotro and Lady Ivilworth. The winner paid a. t%vo figure dividend. THE FAVOURITE BEATEN. ; Gold Painting dropped out of the . Welter Handicap, Multifual finishing up favourite, close on £50 better fancied : than Shaki, which in turn was £21 better fancied than Tavistoek, the others, with the exception of Gazette, which was the outsider, being fairly evenly : backed. When they were let go Shaki was first to move, followed by Multifual, Nieomar, The Summit, and Despatch Carrier in that order, Gazette being last. Multifual took charge as they crossed the top, with Shaki, The Summit, and Nicoruar in a bunch, while Tavistoek was liandv. Multifual was .clear at the
distance, but Tavistoek, finishing fast, gradually wore him down, winning a good race by a length. Nieomar got : third a length and a-Jialf away, with The Summit fourth and Gazette last. THE TWO-YEAR-OLDS. "• , i All the acceptors came out for the Sap- ' pling Stakes Handicap, and Beltant and , ITyllus monopolised the betting, the for- j s ber being about a £60 better favourite, I i the only other to get anything like fair | j support being Tinkler. \Vben they were j r let go Hopeite moved first, but Beltane' 2 soon rushed to the front, leading across j'! the top followed by Hyllus and Sunny j, Climes, which were together, with Ilex- . ton heading the others. Beltane still Jiad charge when they turned for home, J but tired badly in the run down the. straight, and llvllus taking command, stalled off a run by Hex ton, and won by j a length and a-half. Sunny Climes was a length away third, and then came i Tinkler and Beltane, with Lady Elysian ■ last. TTIE HEAVYWEIGHTS. Maractotaia declined her engagement J in the Kedclytl'e Hack Welter, for which j ] Tore was made a very warm proposition, carrying more than twice as much as ' Ilylatus and Lady Nolan, which were i, evenly backed, while there was a little ; money for Goldcnlyte, Whakakoki and ' Spain. They were let go to the best dispatch of the day, Con being quickest to begin, while Spain and Whakakoki were cut out and were the last pair. Going along the back Con made the run- ( ning, ' followed by Ilylatus. Admiral Bcatty and Fore, and this quartet comprised the leading division crossing the top, \vhere Spain and Whakakoki were still a long way back. At the distance I Con and Fore were disputing the issue. ! when Spain came with a fast run, and j Whukakoki also put in a claim, Spain getting the verdict by a neck from Con, which was half a length in front of I i Whakakoki. with which Fore was almost !on terms. Ilylatus was next, nnd then j came Goldenlyte nnd Lady Nolan. I THE CONCLUDING EVENT. J Xvon Park was not saddled up for the Flying Handicap, which left half a dozen to" contest the event, .liygitias wa.s an odds on favourite, Zeus and Sea Lord 1 being the only others to get decent j ! backing. When they were let go Waio- j j rcwa was lirst to move, but llyginns soon ! ran past her, leading across the top, Col- 1 I lowed by YVaiorewa and Sea Lord, which i were together, with the others bunched. j Hyginas turned for home with his advantage unaltered, and, easily holding I his own in the run down the straight, ! won with a bit in hand by two lengths j from WaioJcwa, which was a similar ; distance in front of Sea Lord, with Dowuham dose up fourth.
