The Hon. W. H. Herries left Whangarei for Auckland to-day. . Mr. Thomas B. Ward, an officer of-the Methodist Church for thirty years, died on Sunday at Kaiapoi. Mr. John Frater, junior, son of Mr. Robert Frater, has been elected a member of Auckland Stock Exchange. Mr. T. W. Waite, commercial agent of the New Zealand Railways, is in Auckland, and is staying at the Star Hotel. Mr. Jno. Patterson, has been appointed by the Otago University Council as lecturer on accountancy law. ! Mr. Sydney. J. Halcombe, of the, firm ,of Smith and Halcombe, died at Cambridge on Tuesday. Mr. Halcombe's health has been failing for the last couple. ;of years. A telegram from'the" Rev. A. B. Spears was read at the New Zealand Methodist Conference this morning as "Believe it imperative for mc to enlist." Owing to serious \ ill-health during the past year,,the.oydinatiou of the Rev. U. B. Gosnell, of Avondale, who shortly leaves for the Morrinsville circuit' of the Methodist Church,, has been postponed .Until August. The Rev. Har6ld S. Perkins, of the Congregational Memorial Church at Hobart, has been gazetted a captainchaplain to the Tasmanian Forces. He was formerly, minister of Tennyson. Street Congregational Church, Christ-, church, and was well-known in Auckland. ' '' . -
A large circle of close personal friends of Mr. E. C. McCaskey will regret to learn of 'his death after some three--months' illness. .'. Mr. McCaskey was a Geraldine boy, and, after residence in Wellington, -where his parents now live, he came to Auckland about a couple of years ago to join the staff of Messrs." J. B. JfacEwan and Co. He was a w.ellknown resident^of Cheltenham, aniyvas a popular -member of : the Waitemata Golf Club.
Captain J. A. Shand, of the 11th Rein. \ foreernents, is at present in Auckland on final leave, and is the guest of Mr. an.d Mrs. R. Wynyard, atJDevonport. Wfrde in Auckland. Gapt. Shand is intervieir'ing the 'Mayor, relative to various matters coming - within the .province of the Patriotic. Association. Captain Shsind's two sons, who were wounded at GalMpoli, are making excellent progress towards recovery. One recently returned bo New _u_f injury" to ffie spine. Mr. A. J. E. Schwartz, a well-known resident of Christchurch, has - just died in that city. He came to New Zealand in 1867, and was - for some time a builder at Dunedin. In 1872. he went to Christchurch,'. and was for some time Inspector of Public Works. j He.was a life-long member of--the Ameiican-Order of Oddfellows, and for twenty years a warden of St Mary's Anglican Church, Addington. Before • leaving- Denmark, Mr. Schwartz was attached to the Royal Engineers, and supervised tile erection of railways and' barracks, during' the war df 1867.
There died lately, at the Rawene hospital, an old and respected settler in the person of Mr. Charles W. Lewis; Mr. Lewis was a man of varied experience, having held responsible positions, in all of which he proved himself a mta of sterling qualities; taking always great interest in the social life of those among whom he Dyed, and.by his example of honest endeavour and. purity of life, did much good. Of. late years Mr. Lewis; in conjunction with his brothers, has owned and 'worked"successfully a large/ farm in the Hokianga district, and h_ death brought many sincere expressions of sympathy from a host of friends of both races.--...
