NEWMARKET PRECAUTIONS.
At the meeting of the Newmarket Borough Council, held last night, some interesting statements were made in connection with the infantile paralysis outbreak. This was consequent upon the reception of the circular from the Health Department, pointing out the precautions necessary in mitigating the epidemic. The Mayor (Mr. J. McColl) stated that every precaution had been taken previous to the Health Department's letter. The streets had been continuously watered for some time past !At the present time the borough's position was a most satisfactory and enviable one. The total number of cases of infantile paralysis in the district, out of a population of 3000, was four; all of these were mild cases. Mr. F. J. O'Meara said this was a most gratifying circumstance, as the number of cases in the suburbs had been recently estimated as one in every 400.
In the Birkenhead borough vigilance is being exercised in connection with the epidemic, but the Mayor (Mr. McPhail) states that there is no call in the district for drastic action. Arrangements have been made for the fumigation of the Northcote main and side schools, and the hall used for picture shows, and every precaution is otherwise being observed. ABOTEEK CHRISTCHIKCH CASE (By Telegraph.—i Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, this day. Another case of infantile paralysis is reported here.
