A GALLIPOLI MEMENTO.
FOB AtrCKXAITD'S PARKS. GUNS FROM "THE BOYS." The city of Auckland is about to have placed in one of the city parks a memento of the great feats of the "Anzacs" on the Gallipoii Peninsula. Last night the Council received from the Minister for Defence the following letter: "Recently the troopship Monowai returned from Egypt, and brought several pieces of ordnance from GaUipoli. ■Among these were two ancient mortars, and inside the barrel of one of them •was a note dated October 24, 1915, written from the New ZeaJand and Australian Division Ordnance Depot, No. 2 Outpost, Gallipoli, signed by Sergeant A. Gilmour, Auckland Regiment, and five other members of the New Zealand and Australian Division. These men expressed the desire that the mortars should be "erected in some suitable park —Auckland preferred,' and I shall ibe glad to send them on to Auckland if you will have them placed in a suitable spot in one of your parks. In this connection I desire to advise that the Department's rule in regard to the disposal of war trophies is that where the same are not returned with a specific request for their allocation to any particular district, they are stored and listed pending a distribution at the termination of the war, but in cases like the pr&jent, where the donors express a definite wish, the samp will be duly given effect to immedkitoly on arrival of the trophies.*'
The City Council unanimously intimated their acceptance of the gift, with thanks to the donors, and to the Minister for Defence for giving effect to the retjucrt of the donor?.
