LABOUR IN AUCKLAND.
' TRADE GENERALLY SATISFACTORY r BUILDING SLACK. Trade in Auckland for the first month - of 1910, according to the Labour report i for January, issued to-day, has been in - the main satisfactory, the large holiday ; traffic having materially increased the i j returns of a number of retail traders. - J In the soft goods trades the summer ' . sales now being held promise good re- '■ suits, and in the provision trades-busi-ness is keeping up very satisfactorily. Of the building trades, bricklaying, i \ painting, and stonemasonry, are reI ported slack, while is brisk. ! There are also men unemployed in the j carpentry and plumbing trades. Booki binding and saddlery are brisk, and most lof the other trades can be put down aa ! normal. There is little activity in unI skilled labouring work, but experienced. I farm hands are in demand. Some mining J employers are experiencing difficulty in ! securing truckers and miners, but" the j trade is stated to be busy. During the month of January 39 unskilled labourers were assisted to employment, 15 of whom were married, with 39 dependents. In addition to those cases, two wives were assisted to join their husbands. The analysis of the business transacted by the Women's Employment Branch of the Department shows that during the period under review 197 applications were received, 147 of. which were from employers and 50 from women desiring ' employment. Through the bureau 39 engagements weve made, positions for married women being secured in 13 cases.
