ZEPPELIN RAID OVER THE MIDLANDS.
TONS OF BOMBS DROPPED BUT NO MILITARY DAMAGE. ■? MATERIAL DAMAGE AT ONLY ONE POINT. LONDON, February 2. The Official Press Bureau has made the following statement concerning the raid by six or seven Zeppelins over the eastern midlands on Monday, by which 54 persons were killed and 07 injured: — "Zeppelins yesterday dropped bombs on several towns nnd rural districts in Derbyshire, Leicestershire, Lincolnshire and Staffordshire. The Germans claim to have bombed Liverpool and Birkenhead, the smelting furnaces at Nottingham and Sheffield, and industrial works on the I lumber and Yarmouth." The War Office announces that further reports show that Monday's raid affected the largest area of any raid yet attempted. Bombs were also dropped in Norfolk and Suffolk. It is estimated that 210 bombs were dropped. Except in one part of Staffordshire, the material damage done was inconsiderable, and there was no military damngc. No further casualties are reported. A Berlin official statement claims that the Zeppelins dropped large quantities of explosives and incendiary bombs on the docks, harbours and lactones at Liverpool and Birkenhead, on the foundries and smelters at Nottingham and Sheffield, and on the great industrial works on the River Humber and at tireat Yarmouth. The Zeppelin crews observed gigantic explosions, with serious conflagrations, and also silenced a battery on the Humber. The airships, although heavily shelled, returned safely.
