THE NORTH ATLANTIC RAIDER.
BELIEVED TO HAVE ESCAPED THROUGH KIEL CANAL. ~"l RELEASE OF THE APPAM DEMANDED. CBy Cable.—Prese Association.—Copyrlsht "' - (Received 10.30 a.m.) "WASHINGTON. February 2. Sir Cecil Spring Rice, British Ambassador, has formally demanded the return of the Appam to her British owners under Article 21 of the Hague Convention. It is probable that the case will be referred to the United States Supreme Court. Lieutenant Berg, in command of the Appam's prize crew, has asked the United States to consider the Appam a fair war prize. A close guard is maintained, and it is impossible to obtain the real facts of the "capture. The State Department is undecided whether to intern the Appam or not. All her non-combatants will probably be freed. British warships are ready to recapture her is she decides to make a dash seaward. In any case, complications are expected. It is understood that the Moewe escaped through the Kiel Canal in order to raid British shipping. The British Consul at New York now announces that no submarine accompanied the Appam. The whereabouts of the Moewe are undiseoverable. It is believed that she las half-a-million sterling of South African bullion aboard. The Clan McTavish. sunk by the raider, shipped some cargo at Waitara and Wellington, but the details are not available. She left Wellington on October 8 for Brisbane, and after calling at Sydney, Melbourne, and Adelaide, left Fremantle on December 7. The following cargo was shipped at Australian ports: —Sydney, 1.800 bales of wool, 5.275 carcases of mutton and lamb, 20 barrels of "tallow. Melbourne, 70 bales of leather. Adelaide, 2,051 bales of wool, bags of wheat, 061 tons of flour, 25 bales of leather
