The weather looked anything but promising on Saturday afternoon when tbe executive of the Auckland Rowing Club met at the boat shed to give the boats a final overhauling before submitting them to the trial four creWs which were picked to row for the coveted Kohn Trophies. During the week the crews have been putting in real solid training, some being out till late in the evening. It was well after the announced starting time when tbe rain ceased. The water was excellent for rowing purposes, and as expected some very fine racing was the result; — First Heat.—Stainton (stroke), R. Carder, Atkinson, Stevenson. 1: Murray (stroke), Hamilton, Stewart, A. Hugill, 2: Maisey (stroke), Robertson, Basham. McUinley, 3. Tie crews got well away together. Stainton obtained a slight lead, and kept it A real good race was fought out between the two remaining crews, .Murray just beating his opponent by half a canvas. Second Heat.—J. Lovett (stroke), S. Hugill, Benjamin. Basham, 1; Flemmlng (stroke), Bruce, E. Lovett, Dixon, 2; J. Cleal (stroke). Cook. Hawes. Sawyer, 3. As usual Lovett got in several real nippy strokes at tbe start, obtaining a lead. This he increased slightly bolt way over the course. Flemming aud Cleal came a good second ontlrthtrd. After a little light refreshment Lovett and Stainton took to the boats once agaiu, twill crews determined to win. Tbe starter had no sooner given the signal than Lovett was nicely away, rowing a brisk stroke. It v.-ns not until about tbe third stroke that Stainton's crew got going. Both crews settled down to hard work, not a foot separating the contestants. One crew would gain a little, then the other. About tbree(luarier way more weight was called for; the heavier crew responded splendidly, but Lovett was at them again, and amid the excitement which seems to hover around tbe judge's post, the nose of Stainton's boat caught the judge's eye. lt was the race of the day. Mr Joe Carder made an efficient starter.
