The Hon. A. MTHyras', 'Minister of Munitions, arrived from Wellington yesterday afternoon on a week-end visit. Dγ T. Petty, of Ashbnrton, has been appointed a captain in the N.Z.M.C. Mr John Henry: Stringer has been formally; recognised.as Consular Agent at Christchnrch. for. the United States. Sir Joseph Ward ie atf present at Rotorua. ■ . Mr L. F. Ayeon, Chief Inspector of fisheries, is staying at the Star Hotel. He will.shortly visit Bay of Islands. Mr. 6. J. Cooper, general manager for New Zealand of the Liverpool, London and Globe Insurance Company, is at. present on a visit to Anckland, and is staying at the Grand Hotel. The position of headmaster ,of the school at Apia, Samoa, has been offered to Mr. E. J. Newland, the present headmaster of Kurow school. There were twenty-five applicants. The Mayor (Mr J. H. Guneon) and the chairman of the Harbour Board (Mr JH. D. Heather) left for Waihehe last night to spend the week-end with their families. " Mr E. S. Abrahams, chairman. of directors of the Tanpo Totara Timber Co., with Mr A. Strong and Mr C. J. Monro, of Palmereton North, and Mr R. M. Sinclair, of Wellington, directors of the company, are staying at the Grand Hotel, after paying a visit of inspection to Tanpo district. Mt.H. J. H. Blow, 1.5.0., Under-Secre-' tary of Public Works, has resigned after 43 years' service. He has been granted three months' leave of absence. Mr Blow came from London in 1872, and joined the Public Works Department the next year. Since 1891 he has filled the important position of Under-Secretary of Public Works. Captain Sir Robert Walker, of the Coldstream Guards, is staying at the Grand Hotel. He was with his regiment in France in March, but was invalided home. He is in New Zealand by invitation of the Defence authorities, and will probably take an appointment on the N.Z. Staff Corps. Under the heading of "A Popular Banker," the "Lyttelton Times" refers to a presentation made by the citizens to Mr. C. P. Thomas, manager of the Christchurch branch of the Bank of Kew Zealand for some years. Mr. Thomas comes to Auckland as trustee of the Trust Department of the New Zealand Insurance Company. Mr. Boss Clark, chief officer of the 5..8 Katoa,. was to-day paid a very manly compliment by the sailors of the vessel. Mr.- Clark is about to go to the training camp in preparation for active service, and his men on the.boat desired to show that they wished himjjWellif.They mustered at midday, and presented the chief officer with a handsome' wristlet watch, engraved, "Prom the sailors. 'of the Katoa," ; and took the opportunity to tell him that they respected him as an officer and a gentlemaji, and wished him all the good luck that was due to him. ' Mr. Thomas Wheatcroft, of Auckland, who died very suddenly on .Tuesday morning at English's Bush, was the eldest son of the late Mr. David Wheatcroft, of Nottingham, England, and Mrs. M. A. Wheatcroft, of Auckland, and brother of Mrs. 'J. Meldrum, of Bond Street, Dcvonport. He had been on a visit to his sister about a week ago, and then complained of slight pains at the jheart, but apparently thought medical advice unnecessary. Mr. Wheatcroft at one time carried on a hnkerv business in Karanga.ha.pe Road, JCewton. The interment, which was private, took place at O'Xeill's Point Cemetery on Thursday.
