WELLINGTON RAGING CLUB.

■ _, th THE SUMMER MEETING. " I BEE WINS THE CUP. IN RECORD TIME. \ 1 SOME FAST GALLOPS. (By Telegraph.—Special to "Star.'T WELLINGTON", Thursday. The Wellington Racing Club's Summer Meeting opened at Trentbam to-day. It rained fairly heavily in Wellington in the morning, but on the course only very light rain bad fallen, and, though there were one or two drizzling ehowers -during the racing, they were not of sufficient volume to affect the going, which was exceptionally fast, and several fresh records were put np during the day. The attendance was a bit disappointing, and, without the men in khaki, of whom there was close on four thousand, it would have been very sparse. The racing throughout was interesting. The Wellington Cup, In which a fresh New Zealand time record was made, was won by the South Island mare Bee, with another from across the Cook Strait, First Glance, second, and the Auckland Cup winner Balboa third. Speculation fell short of last year, the tote receipts being £37,139, compared with £40.614 10/. THE RACING OPENS. Racing opened with the Trentham Welter Handicap, which brought out the ten acceptors. For some time puntere were divided as between Hlnemanu and Black Ada, but the weight of money saw the former wind up nearly a two-hundred pounds better favourite. Lady Nolan got good support, and there was a little money for Whakuhokl and Bcllyhar, but nothing was really given a chance outside the two favourites. With the exception that Whakahokl hung and lost some ground, it was an even start. Rosoland got ont to make the running, followed by Ballyhar and Black. Ada, but, with a couple of furlongs covered, Roseland and Lady Nolan were together in the lead, Arlington, Black Ada and Ballyhar next, and Hlnemanu heading the others. Crossing the top Arlington ran up to the leaders, and a little further on Black Ada, Hinemanu and Rongora improved their positions. At the distance Arlington was done with, and Black Ada shot 1o the front, to be immediately challenged by Hlnemanu and Rongora. A good race home resulted in Black Ada getting the verdict by a neck from Hlnemanu, which was a head in front of Rongora. Koumania was fourth, and then came Marslnah, Ballyhar and Arlington, with Hoseblush lost. A FAST-RUN RACE. The withdrawal of Hyttns, Tino Atna, Carlatour, Ktlkec, Wrestler and Struggle left a dozen to contest the Nursery Handicap. Egypt wound up a warm favourite, carrying nearly twice as much as Nystad, the second, while Elation, Sarah Grande, Sweet Tipperary, Klllena and Menelnus all had friends. Sweet Tipperary was troublesome at the post, but from the stand It looked to be an even dispatch. Egypt showed out flret, but when they reached the course proper Sweet Tipperary had charge, Jnst in front of Nystad, with Egypt, which met with some interference, next, and the rest of the field bunched. At the distance Sweet Tippernry wan out by herself, but Egypt, putting in a good run on the outside, gradually wore her down and won by halt a length. Klllcna finished fast nest the rails and got third, a neck further back, and then came Mcnelaus, Rockbound and Elation, with Sarah Grand last. The time, 50 4-ss, is a record for the course over the distance. AN EAST WIN. The thirteen acceptors were saddled up for the Anniversary Welter Handicap. Ladogenr was backed as if it was all over, going over the four-figure mark, aud carrying nearly twice us mueu as Orleans, the second fancy, which was a ehade better backed than Botanist, while Bertrada and Monlu got some support. The rest of the field were comparatively neglected. When the button was pressed Ladogenr, Ceylon, Combustion and Orleans were caught In the tapes, and lost a lot of ground, the latter In cartlcnlar being unlucky. When they settled down Mystified and Moulu were showing the way, but passing the fivefurlong post Ladogear hart made np his leeway and worked his way to the front, and led across the top, followed by Mystified, Monlu and Prince Laddo, with Ararat leading the others. Ladogeur turned for home well clear, and, easily keeping his advantage in the run t*> the Judge, won pulling up by four lengths from Ararat, which beat Mould a head for second honours. Combustion was fourth, and then came Botanist, Down and Prince Laddo, the last to pats the post being Multum in Parvo. THE FAVOURITE BEATEN. The scratching pen was freely used in the Trial Plate, Martuk, Marsinah, Kellerman, Pacific Slope, Carlyslm, Limpet, Margerluc, Sir Musketry and Tango all dropping out. Just hall those carded went to the post Red Ribbon was sorted out as the «\ oil thing, carrying over a thousand pounds, and dose on three hundred more than Shakl and Dribble, which were next in request, while a lot of money went on Week End. When they were let go Dribble was first to move, and set out to make the running, with Pyjoma and Week Bod as her nearest attendants, the favourite being last. Dribble still had charge ac they turned for home,' and,, though Week End and (Pyjama challenged', in the run down the straight,-they. - could not reach Dribble, which won nicely by a length and a-half, a head separating second and third. Red Ribbon finished fast, and got fourth, with Beadown and Merry Dale next, and Shakl last, SOUTH ISLAND VICTORY. . When the nnmbers were , framed for the Wellington Cnp there were no TiihdrawaU. Tho seventeen acceptors were saddled up, and they made a good showing as they paraded before going to the poet. With the exception that Biwi Poto and Tarlngamntu all were sweating freely, it woe generally conceded that as a whole they were as fine a lot as has jet contested the went. When the backers got to work the money came freely for Snub and Blackall, apd tor a long time it wae a toe 3 up which, would be the best backed. Eventually the former had £6 more on bis number, end the pair carried just under four flgrres apiece. Balboa, with. £300 less on his chance, was third favourite, and about £40 better baefctd than Welcome Nugget, while Indigo and Teringunutu carried a lot of money. .The order of the otnersln the betttag was Bewi Poto, Rinaldo, Kirst Glance, Master Moaton, Bee, Adjutant, TangXhcw, Square Deal, Sir (Solo, Sir Alba, and Sir Knox, the tart nine'all being at good prices. When they lined up at the barrier there was net much delay. «ad titer appeared tram the stand to get away on terms, with the exception of Adjutant, which lost several lengths. When the tapes lifted Taringamutu dashed to the front, and led past the stand, followed by Rewi Poto,. Tanglhon, First Glance, Square Deal, Sir Solo, Balboa, Snub, Maeter Moutoa, Bee, Sir Alba,

Hackall, Indigo, Welcome Nugget, Aujuant, and Elnaldo, wltb Sir Knox last. Id bis order they left the straight. Going done the back, Tariugamutu was running : couple of lengths In front of Square Deal, '•* vltn Sir Solo next, and Snub, Master rtoutoa, First Glance, Welcome Nugget, uid Tangihou, with a bunched field, Jus. . jehinri the latter. Balboa and Blackall 1 vere In the middle of the bunch. Crossing ie top, Taringanratu waa still setting the wee, Square Deal being her nearest a ittendant, with Welcome Nugget, Snub, First Glance, Tangihou, Sir Solo, Bewi Poto, Balboa, Blackall and Bee racing In ;hat order. First Glance ran through a» .hey swept ronnd the turn for borne, when :be field closed up, and, as the top weight * anded Into the straight apparently full of 1 a. great shout went up in ncr * favour. At the distance she still had her advantage, but Bee and Balboa, getting clear just inside the distance, both challenged, and First Glance tiring in the last hundred yards, Bee got up on the outside to beat her by three-parts of a length. Balboa, which was finishing on, was a ength away, third, and then came TuringaDntu, Welcome Nugget, Square Deal, Uewl Poto, Master Moutoa, Blackall, lUnaldo, tad Sir Alba, the last three being Six Knox, Adjutant and Sir Solo. The winner has generally been regarded as a sprinter, and won several good races over short courses, but to-day she shaped like a stayer, and won nicely at the final. First Glance and Balboa both ran good races under their heavy imposts, the rider of the former making the mistake of trying to win his race too far from home. Ihe time was very fast, the mile and a-half being covered in 2.31J, which constitutes a New Zealand record. THE HACKS. Merry Dale, Privation, Pukemooi, and Miss Adventure were withdrawn from the Ituapehu Handicap, Mactuk finishing up a strong favourite, £300 better fancied than Hpdrus, which had a couple of hundred pounds more on his chance than Jean Laddo. Spirited speculation was practically confined to the trio. Hydras was first to show out, and when they came into the straight' Tango and llartuk were in line. The trio had the race to themselves, and Hydras won comfortably by half-a-length, with the favourite two lengths further back, third. Jean Laddo was fourth, and then came Miraculous and Happiness. NONES WINS EASILY. Expect dropped out of the Waterloo Stakes, and, contrary to expectations, Chortle was better supported than the brackctted pair, Emperador and Nones, the Gieborne-owned horse having about a hundred pounds more on his number. Wishful and Flying Start were only given etartersf chances. When the tape iifted Chortle was squeezed out, and lost some ground. Nones was early in the lead, and when they settled down was showing the way to Flying Start, after which came Emperador, Wishful and Chortle, in that order. Crossing the top. Chortle moved up, and when they got. into the straight, wan Nones' nearest attendant. In the run to the post he threw oat a strong challenge, but Nones was only cantering In front, and Ehe won easily by two lengths, her stable companion being three lengths further back, third, and WUhful last. The performance of Nones was a good one, for she really made aone-norseraee of it, and it is a long time since two fillies like Desert Gold and she have been seen out In the one season. The time was a record for the course. r KtaSMJIUEIS SEINEOMIsaW The only withdrawal from the Telegraph Handicap was Ma-rco Bello, Mr. Lowry relying on Tete-a-tete, notwithstanding her big weight. When-the betting; ceased the imported horse Panmure was a warm proposition! with nearly £500 more on his number than Byglnas, while Chakwana carried jnst on £100 less than the lastnamed. Good support wag also accorded Downliam and , Findborn. From what could be picked up of the start, Sweet Corn land Tete-a-tete were first to. break the line, and the pi4r .had chargeJwhen.th.ey - , reached the coarse proper, with Chak-. waria, Hyginas and Findhorn most pro-' mlnent of the others. At the distance Sweet Corn was beaten. Tete-a-tete and Clinkwana went on in the lead, and were having an interesting set-to, when Pannrare came along on the outside with a phenomenal run, and, finishing with a great, burst of. speed, flashed past, the post a winner by half-a-length from Tete-a-tete, which was a similar distance in front of Chakwana. Findhorn was fourth, and Sweet Corn next, the last to finish being Do wit ham and Bonny' Dream. The rider of the last-named lost his Irons.
