MORE SHIPPING SPACE.

TELEGRAM FROM PRIME MINISTER. 16,500 INSTEAD OF 45,000 CARCASES. \ telegram with reference to the meat space allotments for Auckland has been redeived from the Prime Minister by Major D. H. Luck, vice-president of tfle Farmers' Union. It shows that Mr. Maesey is trying to meet Auckland requirements, but even now the situation is regarded as by no means satisfactory. The position is that on a careful examination of the statistics it wae found that this province is entitled to one sixth of the space allotted for the whole of the Dominion. The allocation made for the present month was, however equal to only one and a third per cent.—sufficient for 2500 carcases instead iOf 45,000 carcases. Further examination showed that the same sort of thing was bein" done with regard to the February shipments, and that it had, in fact, been going on for some time past. The Farmers' Union therefore wrote to the Prime Minister pointing out how Auckland was still regarded as the Cinderella, of the provinces in the mater of shipping space, of which ehe was by no means getting a fair share. In his telegram Mr. Massey states that he has consulted th 6 Overseas Shipping Committee, and that it has now been arranged for the Corinthic to take 2000 more carcases than was intended, also that the Tainui (which had not been going to call at Auckland) would load 12,000 here on or about January 28. It had been hoped, he adds, that the Indrapura, shortly due at Auckland, would be able to load frozen meat simultaneously with her unloading operations, but this was not now possible. "This means," said Major Lusk, "that we are to have space for 16,500 carcases instead of 2500 carcases, but even so we are getting much less than our share. Auckland has not been treated fairly in the past, and we cannot stand that for ever.
