REVOLVER SHOTS AT NIGHT.

AN EPSOM LNCIDENT. There was some excitement in Wapiti Avenue, Epsom, the other Bight. A resident there was about to retire at midnight, and on going to draw the blind of his bedroom window before switching on the light in the room noticed a man in the moonlight outside at the gate, behaving in a suspicious manner. Tlie man's - attention appeared to be concentrated on the window of a bedroom where some young ladies were preparing to retire, and a quiet warning was conveyed to them to put out the light, which tbey did. Thereupon the resident armed himself with a revolver, stole out the front door, and on seeing the Other man inside the gate called on him to state his business. The outsider bolted, and was followed down the streets by a couple of revolver shots. The householder then noticed an unoccupied motor-car standing by the kerb just round the comer, and'still believing that the man who had fled from the gate was a potential burglar, he mentally con-nected-him with the car. Consequently the man of tbe bouse went and got a shotgun and stood guard on the car. Some time later a man came along to take possession of the car, and he was bailed up at the point of the gun, and made to state his name and explain his absence from the car. The motor-car driver denied any knowledge of what had happened at" the house, and was evewtuaJly permitted to drive away. The matter was reported to Ihe police, who, after investigation, and in view of the fact that"the blinds of the girls' bedroom were not drawn at the time, have come to the conclusion that the man seen at the gate was there in the role of Peeping Tom rather than that of Bill Sykes.
