MEDITERRANEAN COMMAND.
SIR A. MURRAY APPOINTED. SIR C. MONRO GOES TO FRANCE LONDON, January 18. Speaking in the House of Commons, in reply to questions regarding the commanders in thn Near East, Mr Austen Chamberlain (Secretary of State for India) said that General Nixon, who was retiring owing to ill-health, was still in Mesopotamia. His successor, Sir Percy Lake, was expected to arrive shortly. General Sir Archibald Murray had succeeded Sir Charles Monro in the Mediterranean command, the latter having been appointed to the command of the First Army in France in succession to Sir Douglas Haig. The forces under General Maxwell in Egypt form part of Sir Arch. Murray's command. General Sir Archibald Murray earned much distinction as Viscount French's chief of etaff during the retreat from Mons, and until after the battles of the Marne and the Aisne- Mc was twich highly commended in dispatches, and was made a K.C.M.G. in February last.
