MINING NEWS.
ROSS GOLDWELDS. WELLINGTON, Thursday. The mine manager reports v follows On .work at the mine for the fortnight ended December 23:—No. 2 east drive wae advanced 41ft in low grade heavy wash, making a total progress of 1124 ft from No. 2 ehoot. At 1100 ft, No. V l9 north driv« was started, and after advancing 10ft the wash improved in the last eft. so that pay values might , be expected. A small test rise went, up for Bft above this drive, but disclosed' nothing more than fair grade wash. No. 17 north drive was continued for 50ft through 2ft Of blue paywaeh. The drive wm holed through to the east branch off No. 6 level. It is purposed shortly to make use of this connection for trucking purposes, thus avoiding the present low level tramming through the mine drainage water, which has long been a great disadvantage. Blocking is proceeding Off Kos. 7 and 11 north drives, and Noe. 12 and 14 south drives.
The manager of the Rose Goldnelds telegraphed yesterday, etating that he had obtained a return of 14oz 18dwt from 220 trucks. The value of this yield is about £50.
