WOMEN IN WAR TIME.
PLENTY OF WORK TO DO. XOBLE NUKSES. (Troni Our Lady Correspondent.) LOXDO\, October 21. It has been proposed by the Assistant JJeeper of Public Records iv a lecture delivered at the London School of Economics that women should bo employed as public archivists. He was of opinion that a great deal of money at present spent on decidedly inexpert work plight be bette-r used if trained pc-ople, and particularly women who could carry out certain operations more effectively and neatly than men, were employed. The London County Council now employs smartly uniformed girl messengers in place of boys. Just outside MUidanovatz, a Serbian village where the "Seottiili Women" (tha National Union of Women's Suffrage Societies Scottish Women's Sospitate) have a hospitaj for -100, the Serbs have built an aivh over a spring o| drinking water, nnd put tip the inscription in English and Serbian: — lv Memory of the Scottish Women's Hospitals in Serbia And their Founder. Dr. Elsie Inglis. On one side of the fountain the drinking water runs, and on the other side there is.a screw to which a tube for filling water carts can .be fixed. There is also a drinking trough for animals, ■and all round the memorial tho Serbs are making a little park-like ornamental enclosure. This splendid society now truns no , less than four hospitals, with a total of 725 beds, in Serbia. Mrs William Lees, who has with great distinction fulfilled her duties as Mayor, and has been re-elected in Oldham " (in Lancashire), is to take duty -on the nrunicipil tramway service in that city. Hammersmith "guardians" have appointed a woman to act as a relieving officer in place of a man who had resigned. The anti-alcohol measures in France aTe becoming more and more strinccnt. The Government has just decided that iv future, throughout the whole ot France, cafes and bars are to be prohibited from serving before noon any spirits or other alcoholic beventses containing alcohol at more thn ]S deg. The sale of such spirits to women and minors is prohibited absolutely, at no matter what hour of the day. Is it not inspiring (and amueing'.} to reflect how short a time it is since the anti-suffragist would have denied a woman a vote because when fighting was aboard she stayed at home? The field unit of the Scottish Women's Hospitals —which now have hospitals in each of the Allies' countries, save, perhaps, Africa—raised ;by Girton and Newnham and sent to Troyes, where it was under the direction of Mrs Harley, sister ot Field-Marshal Sir John French, has now been sent off with the French Expeditionary Force to Salonika. It only had 4S hoars to pack up and start on its <way. , t 3liss ~-tJje well-known xnearre -manager anil actress, is now employing a woman stage manager, a woman assistant in the box office, and women as ' limelight operators and electrical assistants.
