RAILWAYMEN'S CHRISTMAS.
BEDUCED TIMETABLE SUGGESTED. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, Wednesday. The following letter has been addressed to the Minister for Railways by the general secretary of the New Zealand Locomotive Enginedrivcrs, Firemen, and i Cleaners' Association:—"l am directed; to draw your attention to the increasing ' passenger traffic on Christmas Day, and to make the request that you will look into the matter of reducing the number of trains on this day to a minimum. Members of this union consider that every effort should be made to allow them to have this day in their own homes, and as a section of the public seem to have no consideration for other 3, ■ and seem intent upon travelling on this day as long as there are facilities to travel, we feel more than justified in asking you to take some action towards conserving this day for employees as 1 one upon which the public cannot claim J our services. Many members of this I union look upon this day as being the j most precious day of the year to them J and their families. It is considered that j I you are, to a large extent, a party to I j this deprivation by authorising the run- i ning of such a large number of trains oi! this day. May we, therefore, request that train services be considerably reduced on this particular day and brought into line with Sunday servioea."
