WHANGAREI DEFENCE AREA.
INCREASE IN RECRUITING. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) WHANGAREI, Wednesday. As a result of Captain Dyer's transfer to Auckland, Captain G. Walker has been appointed group commander in Whangarei. Lieut. Rowlings, of the X.Z.S.C., has been appointed area officer and adjutant of the mounted regiment, vice Captain Walker. Lieut. Rowlings is from Duntroon Training College, and has just returned from the front. Some time ago members of the Marsden Defence Rifle Club decided to obtain badges to wear an an indication that they belonged to the New Zealand Defence Rifle Corps. Major Clark Walker has just received the badges and has already distributed a number among the members. The badge is composed of a gold crown within an oval band of green bordered with gold, and bearing the words '"New Zealand Defence Rifles." The badges are very similar to those worn by the National Reserve men. There has been an impetus to recruiting in Whangarei since the Christmas holidays. Yesterday ten men presented themselves, and of tbeee nine succeeded in passing the medical test and one was deferred. All were men of stalwart typt.
