CHRISTMAS IN THE TRENCHES

TEE CAROLS OF WAR. TOMMY'S CHRISTMAS PRESENTS. BULLETS FOR THE BOSCHES. (Received 2_o p.m.) LONDON, December 2G. Mr. Phillip . Gibbs, the "Daily Chronicle's" war correspondent, says that the only carol heard in the trendies was the loud and deep chant of guns on both sides, the shrill soprano of whistling shells, and the rattle of machine guns. If Father Christmas had ventured into the trenches he would have been compelled to lift up his cloak waist-high staggering through the slithering 'sludge. He might at any moment fall deep in the icy pools. The boys jestingly hung up their trenchWaders for their Christmas-boxes, and whenever home was mentioned they became sadly thoughtful, contrasting the present life with former festivities in tieir own homes. Most treated Christmas with humorous irony. Christmassy sentiments were rather out of place where men were lying with rifles waiting to kill, and only thinking of the presents they were hoping to give the Germans.
