HEAVY FIRING BETWEEN YPRES AND LA BASSEE. BELIEVED TO USHER IN GERMANY'S BIG OFFENSIVE. YON MACKENSEN REPORTED TO COMMAND IN ALSACE. i (Received 1.30 p.m.) PARIS, December 26, Growing artillery activity is reported along the Ypres-La Bassee CanaL This is believed to herald the big German offensive in the West, which has been threatened for so long. It is reported that General yon Mackensen, who hammered the Russians in the great drive from Galicia to the Pripet marshes, is now in command in Alsace. Swiss reports indicate that the Germans have been heavily reinforced in that area.
