The work of planting Auckland rock oysters in the Marlborough Sounds has been completed by Mr L. F. Ayson, Chief Inspector of fisheries. Altogether sixteen slants have been made —eight in Fory Channel and eight in Queen Char- ] lotte Sound. It should be understood (says the "Marlborough Express") that the rock-planting operations are entirely experimental. The rock in many places in the Sotmds is very similar to that j found in the Hauraki and at other parts of the Auckland region where the ] oyster thrives. The question is as to whether the temperature and the other conditions of the Marlborough Sounds are suitable, and the investigation will extend over two or three years. It has to be ascertained whether the oyster spats will satisfactorily affix themselves to the local rock. About cix tons of j i oyster rock have been planted, and if i the test proves successful it is probable ! that the Department will bring down ' much larger quantities of oyster rock. ; A stun of money has also been voted by : the Government for an experiment with Fouveaux Strait oysters in the Cook ', StTait regions, pro-babry between the < White Bluff and Cape Campbell. These ' oysters are of the dredge variety, and J the deposits require a rubbly bottom at ■! a depth of from 5 to 18 and 20 fathoms 1 of water.
