E Milncs, principal of the Teachers' Training College, intimated his intention of proceeding on active service with the New Zealand forces. It transpired that the headmaster (Mr. H. G. Cousins, M.A.), and the teaching staff of the Normal School had undertaken to carry on Mr. Milnes' work during his absence, with the assistance of another junior asistant. The chairman (Mr. G. J. Garland) and members of the Board voiced their admiration of Mr. Milnes' decision to go to the front, and expressed the opinion that examples such as this should serve as a stimulus to recruiting. They also spoke in eulogistic terms of the offer of the Normal School staff to carry on the work, and of their action in declining to accept remuneration.
