FATAL ACCIDENTS.

MOTHER AND CHILD DROWNED.

Mrs. Alice Franklin, wife of Mr. John I Franklin, a well known businessman of; Whakatane, and their two-year-old child were drowned at Whakatane Heads on| Monday evening. Mrs. Franklin walked' to the Heads in the afternoon, and as she-did not return a search party-was organised by Constable Cummings. The •woman's body was found in a pool at the base of the cliffs at the harbour entrance at midnight, but no trace of the chad's body could -be discovered. It is supposed that the child was swept off it feet by the tide, and the mother slipped off the rocks and was drowned when trying to recover it.

A BOY KILLED.

COLLISION WITH MOTOR CAR. (Bj- Telegraph.—Press Association.) WATMATE, Tuesday. A boy of 12 years, Roy M. Cotter, was killed on the Timaru Road this evening. He was riding on the wrong side of the road, and collided with a motor car driven by Mr. Boyd, of Waimate. His neck was broken and his skull fractured.
