PRESENTATION OF PRIZES.

A very interesting function took place •last night at the Foresters' Theatre, Onehunga, when during the course of a ! picture entertainment and concert in . aid of the Catholic Schools, the .p-'izes awarded last year by the British and Foreign Sailors' Societj-, for an essayon " Who, in your judgment, is the greatest British sailor next to Kelson?" were pirescnted 'to two'pupils of the local Convent -School. Hi, Worship the Mayor (Mr. J. Rowe) presided, supported toy Mr. G. I. Garland, chairman of the Atic.kla.id Education Board and the Rt. Rev. 'Monsdgnor Mahoney. Mgr. Mathoney said that it was a tsoiuree of great pride to the Caltholics of Onehunga to think that out of the four prizes offered toy the Society to be competed for by all the schools, both public and private, of the Xorth Isla.nd, two of them should '..e won by pu.pils of the Convent School, and not only what, but the last time the Society's prize came to Onehiungia, it had been won by Master Patrick Xeviille. who was attending the District School when he wrote the c.-say, tout (had toeen for several years a .pupil of the Convent School, iM.r. Garland said ithat it was a remarkable tribute to the high standard of education imparted in Onehunga that the Society's .prize should- be won toy the Onehunga schools no iless than " four times in nine years. After a stirring speech to -ill- children. Mr. Garland presented the Society's plaque made from the copper -.heathing of Lord Kelson's flagship, the V.ietorv, to Miss May Miartin, daughter of Mir. Amtonio' ,f. Martin, at present living at DargaviUe nnd tihe 'Society's medal to Master Gordon Maxwell. The latter also won a Govern-iieni- scholarship last year, .which ibe holds at the Gramvmair School the present --.ate of the law wot making it j tenable at the Sacred Hea.rt College. The Mayor also announced that" the Convent School pupils had shown them- | selves to be as clever outside t,he school as inside, for he was about to present to them the silver challenge pass bail cup w.hich wits donated by Mr. ShaMrH. on toehhlt of the frie_M.lv societies of Onehunga. to be competed for annually by all the schools of the Onehunga district, and which has now .been won for two years in I'liccession toy the Convent School. His Worship *h*n presented the cu,p to Misses Murdoch and Simmons lor the winners.
