GERMAN ATTACKS ON FRIEDRICHSTADT REPULSED.
RUSSIANS TAKE PRISONERS AND GUNS IN THE SOUTH. PETROGRAD, September 3. A Russian official communique states:—"We repulsed attacks on Friedrichstadt. Our troops are approaching Vilkomir, north-west of Vilna. Our cavalry carried two villages near Szrrwiky, at the point of the bayonet, some prisoners being taken." "The enemy's chief efforts arc directed along the Olita-Merecz Road. South-west of Vilna we repulsed several obstinate attacks. A stubborn fight took place near Orany, in the Save region. . "After holding the enemy near Grodno as long as was necessary to enable us to evacuate our positions at this point, we crossed to th.s rirht bank of the Nlemen. After holding the enemy in the Luzk district, north of Galicia, we fell back upon the Ulyka-Radziwiloff front. We took h unci reels of prisoners and a number of machino-guns. The enemy occupied Luzk. "Our troops in Galicia, in accordance with our retreating movement fronts the Stry, occupied new positions, enabling us to cover our movements with rearguards, The enemy again suffered very heavily in the region of Zolochow and Zborow, and at the junction of the Strypa and Dniester, Wo here assumed a partial offensive, capturing guns and prisoners and much material."
