CABLE STATION ATTACKED. ESCAPE OF RAIDERS. ! (Special to "Starr.") SA.N FRAXCISCO. May 20. Tho machinations of Teutonic intri- < praers have been evidenced once more on the American-CaJiadian. border. The latest scheme hsa ibeen a determined effort to cut the cable between British Columbia and Australia. In the successful frustration of this plot a party of New Zealand and Australian ' men who recently left San Francisco and unlisted in the Government service, on Vancouver Island played a. prominent .part. Early in the morning, two hours before daylight, an attack -was made by an armed raiding party on the Pacific Cable Station at BamfeM Creek, on the west coast of Vancouver Island. Shots were exchanged between the raiders and a sentry, -who immediately J roused the military guard of the station, and the raiders escaped in the darkness. The attacking party fled in a launch, •which evidently contained a large party of men and which must have been fitted , out from some port in Washington, probably from Puget Sonnd. No one , dc.uibte but that it was a German plot to cut the cable line to Australia. The sentry noticed a suspicious movement in the bushes at the chore. and -went to investigate. A rifle shot cracked out, and a bullet whistled past his head. A ' second later he replied with several shots at the two hatleee men. -who got quite close to the cable offices, but who '■ now rushed to the beaoh. There they got a:boaTd a launch and in a moment the vessel disappeared in the darkness. The military guard at the station made a thorough search of the vicinity, and later obtained information that a launch had been seen exchanging signals with some one, either aehore or afloat. This had occurred on several occasions durin" ' the preceding few days. The eentry caw the two men midway .between the main office ami the superintendent's residence. Extra sentries have since been placed around the office.
