WAR CHARGES.

At la-st night's meeting of the Onehungn Borough Council a letter was read from Mr T. F. Martin, of Wellington, secretary of the Municipal Association of New Zealand, giving the results of hie inquiries from several city and borough councils as to what course they had pursued in respect of claims by contractors for concessions in re&pect of extra charges for freight, insurance, etc.. caused by the war on contracts lot before the war. These replies showed: (1) That con- , tracts for supplies for current year had , been based on increased rates owing to j tin- war; (2) one borough granted exr tension of time, but declined to , pay . extra w;ir freights or insurance; an- . other city council paid extra insurance, ] but no extra freight. In some t cases the city councils paid a portion of the excess freight charges, and another t allowed the full amount.
