ATJCKLiAND CI-nB. Jnne 2(l— Dominion Medal Handicap.

MATJNGAKiEKIE C'IjCB. < .TnDe 20— Dominion Medal Handicap. " (

■ i WAITEMATA CLUB. 1 June 20— Dominion Medal Handicap. t July 3—Winter Sports Carnival at Domain. ■ ( Last week was probably the wettest that Auckland hae experienced this ( winter, and it ■was not surprising to > find the local courses very sloppy on i Saturday. At iliddiemoro casual water 1 was noticraible in many parts, lmt ( more especially on the fairway to the .' fifth and sixth boles. After a spell of ! wet weather such as we had last nveok [ most of the greens on the One-Tree Mil < course become very very - muddy. This I is due. no doubt, to the nature of fcho I soil and to the fact that the grecnft < liavi' very little turf on them and are 1 also in need of better drainage. The 1 same trouble is experienced every year, i and yet no attempt is made to improve ( them. Some effort should be made to f have tho worst greens resown and i drained near the end of this season. ' In spite of the .boisterous weather < quite a large number of members com- i peted in tlie mixe.d foursomes at Mau- ( ngakjekie on Saturday afternoon. The I prizes for the afternoon were presented by Dr. Dudley, a vice-president of the club. Players were' allowed to choose I their own partners and opponents and ' the nonditiona were bogey play. The ( committee, with tin- idea of giving the < long handicap players a better chance. ■ increased the 'bogey at all the even holes, where the ladies drove from, the ' men's tees by one stroke. This in some : instances made the bogey aibsurdlv easy. Take, the "rave" hnlp, the length of 1 which is something over 400 yards. The bogey on the card id C, and being an even hole, -was increased to 7, and ' players with a handicap of 8 were ' allowed a stroke into the bargain. ■ Further comment is needless. 1 maintain that instead of improving the chance, of the lone handicap player the increasing of the bogeys improves the changes of t-he back marker. Those in ■ favour of the conditions under whicli the match was played on Saturday will ; »ay: "Well, horw is it that better cards ' were not handed in on Saturday'r'' Well, my answer is that tlie state o f tii,' greens was a-jrainst good scoring by any ' class of player. It was at first thought that tiie winners were 'Miss Gorric and H. 0. Gardner, but later it wae die- ' covered that on a card handed in as '' two down, the bogey at the even holes had not been increased. On a correction being made it. was found that the proper score eboulil be 4 up. The winners were therefore Miss ('. -Scott and J<\ Browning Miss Scott played a remarkably steady panic, her efforts on the putting preen being very useful on many occasions. Browning has been playing co we!l lately that his handicap was reduced to ]<;, and his success from this mark should jrreafly encourage this young player. I need hardly mention that the win was a very ' popular one. ' ' The interest taken in the captain's ' prizo tourney at Middlomore is very slight, and judging by the way thinga ' are iruinjr. it would ho no surprise to find : the committee cancelling all future competitions. In tho A grade Kalph ami ' Foote playing during the week, .the for- ■ nier winning. 3 nn.l •>. lialph was to have pJayeil I). McMacCormiek on Saturday, but the much was postponed until Wednesday. Laurence defeated !E. Horton in the first round, and then gave N. Macintosh h bye in the second round. iMrgavillo defeated Bamford. then in the second round received a bye from KeJly. who had received a bye "from K. Ross in the first round. DnrgavHle now S". Macintosh. S. Upton was suecoseful in defeatinjr Clark, and now play* H. Tonks. Hi<-ks.in plays the winner of the Ralph M-.u-( ormick match, the winner then playing W. S. OolberU in the semifinal. In the B graded. Ruddock hfls reached the third round by defeating R. Towle, 4 and 3. Two other matches of this round were played on", and resulted in •T. L. R. Bloomliold beating E. 71 Blooinficld. 1 and :t. and (}. Pierce defeating I. Tlart 6 and 5. In the third round A? A. Martin and Thackor. had a dose match, the former eventually winning, 2 up. At Waitomata. the first round of the captain's prize tourney was played off. In most case? T notice tha.t the baekmarker proved victorious, but not by very bip mnrjrins. On Saturday next the competitions for the Dominion medal handicap will hike place on the three local courses. This competition was promoted by Messrs. Watt and Douglas, the 'Wellington profeisskinals. and fhe proceeds from tho entrance fees will be handed over to the Wounded Soldiers' Fund. Under these circumstances it is only reasonable to expect a record entry on Saturday next. 'Hie lady golfers of 'New Zealand will pl«y itfi-morrow in n similar competition. On July Ptrd. a winter sports carnival 1 will be held in the Domain, nnd the local golf clubs have decided to cancel all fixtures on this day in order that mem- ' Tiers may attend this meeting. I understand that a movement is mi foot to get up some sort of competition for golfers. Tlie idea is. I believe, to have an approaching corn-petition. If a strong golfing committee was .formod. I feel sure that a large number of golfers would roll up and pivp all assistance possible towards heilprmr to make the carnival a success. 1 hope next week to have some further information on the matter. K. Ckttdwri-1. W. S. Oolboek. and 0. M:ihon. mo.m'bers of the Auckland Oolf Club, leave for Trentha.ni on July Oth.,
