GERMAN TRENCHES IN FLANDERS CAPTURED
IMPORTANT PROGRESS IN THE VOSGES. ENEMY AGAIN BOMBARDS RHEIMS CATHEDRAL. LONDON, dune XZ. b-ir Toha French report.-; — Yesterday evening we captured a mile of the enemy's first line of trenches Aast of Festubert, west of La Bassce, but failed to bold them during Uie night against strong counter-attacks. We successfully attacked the Merman position north of IToogc. east of Vprcs. early on Wednesday. We occupied their first line of trenches ou a front ut 1,000 yards, and also part of their second line. A hundred and fifty seven prisoner'- were counted up to noon. A German counter-attack was repulsed with heavy loss. A French communique states: —■ We gained ground at various points, notably east of Lorettc and southwest, and south of Souehez. We captured in "the labyrinth" 300 prisoners, an-1 machine-guns-At Quonnevioros. between the Aisne and the Oise. after repulsing several counterattacks, we extended our gains to the northwest, and took lm) prisoners. The enemy threw :|iiu .-hells into Kheims. some of which were of the incentliarv type. ' A dozen project,l.-s hit the Cathedral. We made important progress in the Vosgos. We earned Brannkopf. on the north-rn bank of th" Haute l-'ecllt. taking 300 prisoners, including four other- many rilles, and half-a-miitlon cartridges. On Tuesday some bombwere dropped on 1)io - HeUort. and Nancy. Some civilians were wounded at the latter place. ihe "Daily Mail's" Rotterdam correspondent says that German maebmeguni . becked a spirited Uritish advance near La Habsec, A Rotterdam message says that there was a severe engagement, after a heavy artilk-rv action, along the Ksscn, Dixmude, and ItamscHpellc-Nieuport front. Fresh German corps arc still arriving southward of Vprcs. An allied airman dropped a warning to civilians in Ostcnd that heavy fighting is imminent.
