WANGANUI TROTTING CLUB.

A NORTHERN VICTORY. ' (By Telegraph.—Special to "Star.") WAX<3AXUI, this day. The Wanganui Trotting Club's Annual ■Meeting opened yesterday in line weather anil with a good attendance. The principal event, the Wanganui Cup Handicap; provided an interesting finish, the limit horse (Sceptre) eventually winning by a couple of lengths from Imperial Perfection Uhe second favourite), with Ngaralna, which would have returned a long price, a length away, third. Treasure Seeker, which was sent out a very warm proposition, failed to go the pace set, and was never prominent. Principal interest to Aucklanders centred ( in the doings of the Northern trio, Lord Lonsda'.e, Nut Ansel, and Rotomanuku. The former was sent out a good second fancy for the President's Handicap, but never really struck a gait, and was a long way back at the finish. In this event, however, Xut Ansel, which was on the ■back mnrk, put up a good performance, and. nfter a desperate race with .Monsoon (the favotirltei. got home by a length, and paid a respectable dividend. ■. Xut Ansel started in the Kirkwood Handicap earlier In the day, finishing fast behind the placed horses. ICotoiiKinnk:) was one of the fancies for the Gonvllle Castlecllff Handicap, but never once flattered his backers. In the concluding event of the day Rothschild Excelsior won. with Lodestar second and Professor third. The two former were disqualified for leaving before their time, and the latter got the race Winnipeg fell, and his rider (Maidmentj had a couple of ribs broken. TURF TALK FROM THE SOUTH.

(By Telegraph—Special to "Star.") CHRISTCHTJKCH,' Friday. An arri'-nl of more than average Interest Is the stallion Sanquhar. purchased in England for Sir <;eorge (..MliTord'e stiifl. The newcomer arrived by th« RuiUiini'. and put In an appearance at Chokfbore Ixidse yesterday. Sanquhar which Is a flve-year-old brown horse, bred by Ix>rd Rosetoery. and he vras a good performer dur'mp tht> two seasons he raced He uiadc his first appearance as n two-year old In the Coventry Stakes at Ascot, whei he ran second to Shogn. A few weeks later he won the Prlnecss Plate at Xew- ' market. Bndkuit beat him.by half a leingth In the Imperial Product? Plate nt Kempton ■Park, after which he won the Clearwell .Stakes at-Newmarket. .following this ■jyith another sik-ocss in . the Prendergest Stakes. ■ fie made his Inst appearance ns a tw<v year-old in the Ncwhurst Plate, whet I.om-ois beat him by. a head. At thre« years lie won the Craven Stakes. Giving n lot of weight to all his opponents; h« was fourth to Louvofe, Cragaßour, anc Meeting House in fhe Two Thousand Guineas, • while •at Hurst Park he was second to GTeat Sport in the Whitsiindet Plate. He .next won tire Fifty-fifth Ascot Biennial Stakes. His "final appearance was made In the Atlantic Stakes at Liverpool, ■In which he- broke down; Sauquhar thus , proving himself a good class racehorse. On breeding linns he- also answers- the highest requirements. Sir Geo. Clifford has been ,on nhe lookout for an K-nglisk sire for come time. The Stonylrurst stud* is well off for mares or the Simon line, while every.season is adding, to volume, as Sir George ties sires of Simon's descent (Treadmill, -San Francisco, and Antagonist). For this reason it-was Important to secure* n«w sire free • from. St.' Simon .Mood, and Sonqubar ' appears .to be just what was needed.. We, are having a brief respite at Elccar.ton. tout soon will ■he in the midst of preparations for the Easter meeting. Several BJccarton trained horses claim' engagement at the Gore. Racing Club's'meeting, amongst them being -Moddite, ■ Gelichikoff, and I^adrone. The Baring Commission will shortly start Its task of inspecting -the courses of those Canterbury clubs thnt are making application for totalisator permits. Messrs. Hunter and Davey will visit Canterbury Pnrk on March 2 In connection with the Christchurch Racing Ohib's application, and also Riccarton In "connection with the Ohristchurch Hunt Club's application. The Rnkalii and -Mount Somers courses will be inspected on Starch 5. Peg has resumed work, and looks none the worse for tlie three hard races she had at hne Dunedln Cup meeting. When the ground is softer she Is to be tried over hurdles. Such a good weight-carrier should be very hard to - beat if she takes ktadty to jumping. She Is a half-sister to Corrle, a good jumper. The speedy Onuraru horse Clynelish was a strong fancy for the Onncdin Publicans' Handicap, but he went jinilss, and did not race at the Wlngatui. fixture. Now it is reported that hie racing career is at an end, and that he will retire to the stud ■next seaaon. Olynclish ,is by Spu'lt—Reipbote. This pedigree, represents'some very successful lines. An Otago sportsman was after Snapdragon during the progress of the Bunedin Cup meetlnp, but Sir George Clifford waa disinclined to sell. ■ IXton has been sold, and was shipped north by Thursday nlghfe steamer. She will In future be trained'by H: Ringan at Trentham. Since returning from • the Dunedin meetIng Renel Renal has been sore, and is 'to be treated to a short spell. A. Knight ha.s purchased-the Quarryman mare Big Mast, and she. will stand. at Racecourse Hill Stud' Farm. Bimeter will not race again for some tlriie. as the result of one of his legs filling just before the Wanganui meeting; The acceptances received for two trotting events of the Akaroa Country Ring Club's ainnual meeting are significant that only 47 have been paid up for in the five galloping events. The plough-track was in use at Riccarton yesterday, and provided .excellent going. Battle.
