A PATHETIC APPEAL.

TO TRADE UNIONISTS. FOR HELP FOR THE BELGIANS. (By Telegraph—rress Association ) WELLINGTON, this day. A pathetic appeal for assistance to Belgian workers has been received by Mr. J. Reid, secretary of the United Federation of Labour, from the Dutch Federation of Trade Unions. The letter, dated Amsterdam, December, and addressed to Trade Union national centres- throughout the world, draws attention to the pitiable plight Of the Belgian labouring classes, as a result of their country being ravaged by war, and says that work was stopped in all factories and workshops' on the first day hostilities commenced. ■ Unemployment developed to such 'an extent - that the'trade':unions are powerless'and unable to effectively fight the miseries accruing therefrom. Although the utmost has been done the steps taken were in no way sufficient to keep'the workers and their wives, and- children alive. Belgian trade unions have used every possible means to save their organisations from destruction and to support members during these tragic moments,' but their, means are entirely exhausted. ■ The letter, closed-with'an urgent request for .fluids from trade organisations for -Belgian unions, at present-" undergoing a most serious'and sinister trial."
