The Takapuna Jockey Club's Spring Meeting opened yesterday in fine ■> weather, and with a record attendance for an off day. Tbe principal event was won by Mr. F. Stcnning's Monojack, '> after an exciting finish with Royal Irish, Goldsize, and Phosphorus. Two senior cadets w?re charged at Pahiatua yesterday with obstructing a parade by laughing, jostling, and talking. The commanding officer said that tho defendants were warned several times, an he \va.s very reluctant to bring such chaTges. The defendants made allegations against their officer; which the latter strongly denied. A fine was imposed on each cadet. Orders were made at the Magistrate's Court by Mr. C. C. Kettle, S.M., in the following judgment 'summons cases: — Edward Crawford to pay £7 11/6; John Henry Whitakcr. £8 1/ -, William Stephen Sampson, £7 lA/. Penalties were suspended to afford opportunity to comply with the orders. The totalisator investments at Takapuna. yesterday do not suggest a shortage of money in Auckland, for when tbe totals for .the day came to be made up it wac found that the sum of £20,705 10/ had pawed through tbe machines, which represents an incraaae of £1,542 on la_t year.
