Tbe quarterly meeting of the Birkenhead Methodist Circuit, which took place on Wednesday, was presided over by Rev. T. F. Jones, and there was a fair attendance of circuit stewards and officials. The anniversary of the Mount Eden Adult School was held on Wednesday in the Friends' Meeting House. A bountiful tea was provided, and a plea-ant so.Jal evening followed. Mr. T. Rudd presided. The reports showed the school to be in a flourishing i-ondltion. Short addresses were delivered, interspersed with musical items, contributed by members ani friends of tbe Onehnnga Adult School. OTAHUHU LIBERAL LEAGUE. A meeting of the Ot.ihuhn Liberal Lengne was held ;n tbe Mutual Room on Wednesday evening. Mr. Nodwell presided. The organiser of the Liberal League of Huwke's Bay gave a short address, aud Mr. Geo. I Wilkinson, of Ellerslie. pointed out tbe benefits of organisation. Several new members were elected. Mr. NodweU wns appointed presideut. Councillor John Brady vice-president. Mr. T. Fitzsimuions secretary nnd treasurer, and a committee of five. ATHENAEUM ('IT DEBATE. The second round of the competition of the Auckland Literary and Debating- Union was held last night in the Training College Hall, the chair being occupied by Mr H. A. E. Milnes (president). The competing teams were V.M.C.A. "B" team, and Training College, upon the subje'-t "That the existence of a Second Chamber as a Political Institution is not Desirable." The affirmative was taken by Training College represented by Messrs. Price. Bishop, and Coldham. and the negative by V.M.C.A.. represented by Messrs. Veale, Buckley, and Leonard. Tbe attendance was large, "and an interesting debate tool; place, each team handling Its respective side in a highly creditable manner. At the conclusion of the debate Dr. O'Shaughuessy (adjudicatorl gave an excellent criticism of the respective speakers, and declared the points to he V.M.C.A., 2t{S; Training College, '2M. HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY. At a meeting of the committee of the Auckland Horticultural Society, held last evening, the schedules for the forthcoming shows were approved. It was reported that good progress was being made with the alterations to the Exhibition building, which tbe ('itv Cotiueil has offered to leave on tbe Domain for the purpose of holdlns shows, and would be read.7 for the spring carnival.
