ASSOCIATION.

THISTLE STILL LEAD. BROTHERHOOD SLIP A POINT. TSVO JIATCHES DRAWN. The first game in the second round of the Association senior competition dees not seriously alter the relative positions of the competing teams. Thistle added another two points to their total, but Brotherhood could get only a draw, svith <>ne point, from Evertou. who are pushing them for second place. North Shore went down to Corinthian again, and Carlton and V.M.C.A. played a scoreles-s draw. The follosving table shosvs the present standing of the teams: —

CORINTHIAN" V. NORTH SHORE. By their comparatively easy win by 4 goafs to _ agaiust North Shore. Corinthian arc able to break assay from the tie which has given the two teams equal places for some weeks. Shore played a moderately fair same, but were outclassed by their heavier opponents. They lost some easy chances, and failed to keep up to their normal form. After his line showing last svook, Ilennett, iv goal, was a disappointment, though a few good defences were to his credit. The habit of the Shore of altering the positions of their men from week to week is a bad one. and may explain the reason ot '.he weakened team. Corinthians svere good In combination, and bad some, lusty kickers, who saved their goal several times. They also had as strong a team on the field :.s they ever had, a fact which may be put on the Shore's credit side. No exceptional play marked the game, the match hardly calling forth tbe extreme efforts which might have been expected under the circumstances. Shore lost a good chance at the outset. Securing a penalty, SS'oolley made a hard but very badly judged kick, 'he ball clearing the bar by several feet. The first 20 minutes were Shore's, and after a good rush down, the forwards made a strous dash from a touch near the goal line, Jenkins, at centre forsvard. neatly heading it iv. North Shore 1 Corinthian 0 Corinthian picked up, and made a smart rush down, but a bobpnd saved the Shove situation. Doubling back to the Shore goal, P. Rose, at outside right, caught the ball from a clever pass from the centre, anil took a lovely shot with his right, the ball neatly curling iv. Shore 1 Corinthian 1 Corinthians later secured a penalty from a foul. Rose again taking it. With a clean, hard shot, he notched an easy goal. Corinthian _ North Shore l Corinthian later secured a penalty from Shore's posts after this, but failed to convert a corner. Shore made a stout defence, 'out another corner followed. Play was fairly slack after this, half time sounding without further score. Corinthians continued to do some fine combination svork, particularly among the forwards, and they worried Shore's backs, keeping t'jciu ou the defensive. Following a smart run towards Shore's goal. Holldav, at inside left, made a neat shot, which easily landed betsveeu the posts. Corinthian •; North Shore ]. i The losing side then began to hustle a little, and near Corinthian's posts secured a penalty off bauds. Uowie. at outside right, had no dithculty in scoring. j Corinthian 3 North Shore •. 2 1 The play was then confined fairly well ! to the centre of the held, little good playing 1 being evidenced. Alter a combined rush ( down. Mason, at centre forward, lauded au easy goal. Corinthian 4 North Shore _ After this until the whistle blew Ihe game became somewhat tame, ueitaer side notching another sere. BROTHERHOOD V. ES"ERTON. The second game this season between 1 1 -rotlierboo. aim l-.vertou attracted a very . large crosvd of spectators to Victoria Park", . svuere under the control of Mr. Dawsou (mc of the must keeuiy-ttught contests so j tar. of the .senior competition, was played. j svhen they met in the first round victory I rested svith Brotherhood by three goals to I "tie. but since -that time 'last year's pre- | liners hud settled dosvn into a good work- . ing team with several excellent pt.for--1 inauces to its credit, it svas expected that I the next meeting would be an interesting : one, but few hoped for such a very exciting game as svas afforded. Brotherhood, j always a hot proposition so far as attack ing forwards were concerned, had stiffened up their back division (particularly iv the half-back linei lo such purpose that, as otic spectator put It, "Orro-k at I half was a svbole team In himself.'' Tbe I side was further strengthened in this ' match by the Inclusion of SS'allwork. the prominent full-back of Ihe Hotspur team j last year. Evertou won the toss. and I played in the first spell with the slanting 1 situ at their backs. From the start the I exchanges were very even, and nothing j in the nature of one-sided play was n«tice- | able throughout the match. 'Everton tirst j became prominent in a series of likely- ! lookint: corners gained through bright nla'v I by Pitkin and Boyne. backed up by Bird I ifrom the half-line! on the right" wing. I From one of these T. Brewer, playing 1 cleverly at. centre-half, sent, in a tricky I header which kent the Brotherhood bn-cks 1 very busy. Pitkin snapped- up a chance, and j sent in a hot shot, the only result, how- , ever, being a brilliant save by Oldnall. Meantime Rrotherhoorl had not been idle, and even-hnnded forward work was a bright feature of fheir same. Cocken and F. Pearson made the play trickily by way of the left-wing, and when -the cross came just at the richt moment A. Pearson trapped it at insldr-right, and sent in a clever shot past Cantell. , Brotherhood 1 Evertou 0 Quickened hy this reverse Etverton ran up quickly on to a high speed gear and got very busy. Booth played nicely down to Webster, who made ground with his partner. Isbister, and crossed in front of goal. The watchful Pitkin hopped in skilfully, and scored with a kind of upper-cut which got in under the cross-bar iv that puzzling way which gives a goal-keeper no chance. Everton 1 Brotherhood 1 There was no rurther score during the spell, though there were hot rallies in plenty to keep the spectators on the tiptoe of expectation. Shortly after the opening of the second half lleyes was badly winded, and though be pluckily tried to resume afler first aid had been rendered, his recovery kept him off the field for a good part of the spell. The team kept the pace fast, notwithstanding this handicap, and tho further misfortune of a cut to Kane's eye, which reduced the usefulness of the lively righthalf. -The left-wing gained control, and got through. Knuggs putting the finishing touch to the movement from a rally iv front of goal. ; Brotherhood 2 Evertou 1 I I Again I-.verton responded to the orraj fioß. and Isbister and SYebster became I very prominent for dashing play inspired I by Booth. They dropped to WaliworK. I more successfully than in the first speil. I nnd kept up a constant Are. It was from 'one of these attacks, sustained vigoronslv

by Pitkin and Boyne, that Cocken, in an effort to clear, miskicked into his own goal. Everton « - Brotherhood -.-... - ! Xbe remainder of the game was contested with great vigour and skill, aud goals seemed imminent at each end on several occasions. Robinson was a tower of strength to Everton, but the back play on each side svas remarkably good, torrm triving a splendid display for Brotherhood. On the whole the game, for good work all through, was one of the best that has b.en played this season. SECOND DIVISION. Everton 2. beat ST.Y.M.I. ". Wyles scored for Everton and Reynolds for W.Y.M.I. St. John's met. North Shore at Devonport. and aftpr a fast, interesting, and friendly i game. St. John's svon hy 2 goals to 1. For I Ithe winners. In tbe second half both teams often came near scoring, but when the whistle blesv the score svas utiallered. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, Saturday. The Brown Shield match was played this afternoon between Canterbury and Hawke's Bay. The visitors were complete.lv outplayed on a heavy ground, and were defeated by S to 0. The Cauterbury ream were too clever for their opponents. especially in centre and the halves, which rarely permitted opposing attacks to form. The 'second spell saw the winners shooting every few minutes, and Hawke's Bay were lucky that the score was not greater. WELLINGTON. WELLINGTON, this day.
