HOURS IN MINES.
THE MINERS' DEMANDS. SYDNEY, June 4. A deputation, representative of the various coalmining districts, has submitted to Mr Cann (Stat* Treasurer 1 numerous proposed amendments of the Mining Act. including the limiting .of hours underground and abolition of all night work excepting emergency and developmental labour. These proposals involve tbe abolition of the afternoon shift. Mr Watson (president of the Northern Mines) claimed that if individuals who held a monopoly of trade were allowed to work only one shift it would tend to the development; of the industry. Mr Cann replied t—at he intended to try and give effect to the eight-hour principle, but was not prepared to agree to abolishing the afternoon shift. That depended on whether the minera were strong enough to insist on its abolition. He thought they would have to go down. Mr Watson interjected: But there will be a struggle. Mr Cann promised sympathetic consideration to most of the other suggestions.
