BIRKENHEAD BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The usual fortnightly meeting of the Birkenhead Borough Council was held last night, present: Messrs. W. Wallace (Mayor), F. M. King, Taos. Church, A. G. Bartlett. F. Finch, C. E. Campbell, and J. P. McFbail.
Hospital and Charitable Aid.—The secretary notified the Birkenhead Council —tat their contribution for the current year was _.so 10/10.
Municipal Association.—Mr. A. Harris, M.P., was appointed to represent the Council at the Blcnneal Conference, to be held on July 14th, in the event of no member of the Council being in Wellington at the time.
| Devonport Borough.—The Town Clerk (Mr. .1. 'Wilson) wrote, statins at the last meeting of the Devonport Council, the Ma yor (Mr. Wm. Handley). Councillors Henderson aDd McLean, were appointed delegates to confer with the Mayor and two councillors from each local body on tbe northern side of the harbour, also stating that the conferences will be held at Devonport on June 28tb.
The Mayor (Mr. Wallace) said Birken|head should take action similar to Northcote, and protest against any delegates' first meeting. He contended that . the whole of the different local bodies on the northern side of the harbour should meet in conference as a united body, if any good was going to result. It was decided to again write to the Devonport Council disapproving of the idea of appointing delegates, aud suggesting that the conference be held in the Chamber of Commerce, Auckland.
Government- Ins—ran-c-e. —The —icretary of the Government Insurance Department, in reply to a. communication from the Town Clerk of Birkenhead re £3280 loan, wrote stating that the matter was receiving attention.
Marine Department.—A letter was read from the Marine Department, requesting the Birkenhead Council to provide a more adequate approach to the wharf at Island Bay, Birkdale. The Town Clerk reported that, acting under instructions from the Mayor, he bad refused, stating that the Council had completed an approach to the structure, but owing to the slippery formation and the unsuitable state of the wharf, it was very little used. The Mayor
remarked that if a permanent wharf were erected, the Council won— make the approach more snitable for traffic, but the Council did not feel just—'cd in going to any further expense seeing that it was only used by two or thre of the residents.
Bank Overdraft.—A resolution was moved fixing the bank overdraft at £2500.
Chelsea Wharf.—The iMayor drew attention to the fllthy state of the waitingrooms on the Chelsea .passenger w—arf, and also to the structure generally. It was resolved to write to the Auckland Harbour Board asking for Immediate attention to the matter.
