The number of men employed „ these holdings -7,372, of which total 4000 »™ writing copper and 1,456 are at tbe smelting -works, 'Port Pirie. Totse employed on gold mines mrtnber 800 and <nr 6aK works 500. The amount of copper produced during 1913 was 143322cwt, an -crease of 17,322cwt upon the output for 10T2. Tbe Department of Mm- has offered a bonus of ,£5 000 to —c first person or body corporate that produces 100.000 gallons of crude -petroleum from a ibore or well tit-ted in South (Australia.
WAIHI GOLD MINING COMPANY. ' LAST YEAR'S OPERATIONS. The a_—_ report of the directors of the Waihi Gold Mining: Company for the year ended 31st December, 1913. came to hand to-day. An extract -forwarded by mail appeared in last evening's issue. The follow—g.additional facts are culled -from the! report juit to hand. The balance sheet shows the market value of inves—lente of the Company on Dec. 31. 1913, to have been £379,282 11/1. These investments are pretty well spread all over the world, in Government treasury bills and loans, railway ptock, nnmi—pal loans, and debentures of big companies. The total of £379,----282 11/1 invested, added to £ 12,437 0/5 bullion in transit at that date. £51.567 9/1 cash at bankers, £235.415 11/1 purchase of mines and property, with expenditure thereon, £28,932 15/2 cyanide, eo„urnahie store, etc.. £360 office furniture, £9379 IS/6 expenditure on ore at grass, £6,932 10/4 debit balances and Bccrned interest, made a total on the credit side of £724,307 15/8
The debit side showed £495,907 shares issued at £1 each, £84/>S2 premium on shares, sundry credit balances '£42,745 5/3, unclaimed dividends £1879 3/0, reserve account £90,000. revenue account, balance at credit £9124 7/5, total £724,307 15/8.
The expenditure for the year totalled '£211,394 10/5, of which £101,867 1/5 wis __ing and general expenses, inch—lg pumping and development '£30,536 2/11, transport of ore and milling. l £37,544 4/2, extraction of bullion, power, wages and sundries.. Other ei_Her sums specified made up the ——ice. The pross profit carried down to £140,743 17/9. Of this £99,181 8/ (raa paid in dividends. The income tax, London, absorbed £18,984. and in New Zealand £3,503 12/6. Other disbursements specified left £9,194 7/5 to be tarried forward. Tie expenditure on the Hora flora Ejdro Electrical Works is given as 1-36,490 5/6. The total ore crushed during the year 1913 was 184.768 tons, which produced !_49*03 1/7.
