LACROSSE.

The season is now in full 6wing, and it is pleasing to note that tire standard of play is steadily improving. The five clubs at present contesting the championship are all veTy even. The positions of the teams are as follows! — Pl'd. 'W_ L'st. Ponsonby 2 2 0 Grafton - 2 11 West. End 1 0 1 Auckland 10 1 Tho Grafton versus North Shore match at Vfetoria Park produced excellent lacrosse. The attacking of Grafton's Homes in the early 6taeges of the game was really good, the brothers Philson and Mamey showing to most advantage. The final result of the imatch came as rather a esurprise to most followere of the game, and in view of the fact the Shore were, playing one man sNirt their win is all the more to their credit. Russell and Bell did splendid work on the attack. whUe A. B-ell played a good point game, ably assisted by oil the defence players. Stick work 6eems to be .Shore's weak point, audi members should endeavour to .remedy this iby practice. 3n the West End-Ponsonby match apparently Ponsonby had a comfortable win. West End camp to grief through their defence not sticking close enough to their opponents. Of course., on Saturday they had an extremely clever trio to Watcf, Swales, .HTinsden and McOookrie ' working splendidly togeflipr should he a source of trouble to many defpnee men in the e__esociation. Auckland had a bye on Saturday, but iheir next match is looked forward to with interest. The way in which thpy pluyed against Grafton in the first match of the season shows that, with some practice, they will have seriously to be considered. It seems a wonder to the writer that this team did not come nearer championship honours last season. They Certainly have the material to do better, and practice is what will do the trick. This season is going to be a very busy one for la.:rx»sseii rs generally. Advice has been, received unofficially that the N.SAV. rppresoTitalives leave Australia at the end of August, and are due in New Zealand on September 2nd. It is yet undecided what matches will be played, but the following is a rough idea of those that may he arranged: — N.S.W. v. Wellington, September 3. N.S.W. v. New Zealand, September 5. K.SAV. v. Auckland, eSeptember 0 XJ-.W. v. New Zealand, "September 12. Tn addition to the forgoing Wellington plays Auckland hero .omewherc about these dates.
